pivot entry doors with glass panels safety/security

our plans have a pivot entry door so we are just sussing out styles.

hubby and I both like the Corinthian Sunburst door (http://www.corinthian.com.au/Uploads/Do ... UNWSGL.jpg) - the only thing that bothers me is that since we won't be able to have a security screen (easily - may retrofit one at a later date) that the glass panels would make it easy for someone to break in?

or is it not really an issue?

the other one I like is the Infinity with the vertical panels - they look smaller and thinner so not so easy to smash...maybe...or is this really a non-issue?

We got a pivot with glass panels, the way we see it is if they want up break in they will.
We have an alarm (very loud one days DH who set it off today).
As soon as they're in the alarm will go off, this will st least attract attention so hopefully they'll pee off

The theory is right anyway...

Hi Ellie,

We have a pivot door & are getting a security screen fitted next week. Co is supplying a metal frame that will be fitted to brick opening & screen door will be fitted to this frame.

As for breaking glass & opening door, you could always have a security key operated deadbolt fitted as well as you normal lock maybe?

We have double Corinthian INF4 doors, so lots of glass. The glass is toughened, so much stronger than the glass in a window and pretty difficult to break. I figure if someone wants to get in, they'll break a window instead.

We have one, key doesn't get left in the door in case someone decides to break the glass and unlock it. But really, if someone is going to break in there is plenty of glass around the house they can break to get in.

omg the pivot door IS almost $4K.... DH & I nearly fell off our chairs!

we are modifying our plans to include a standard hinged wider door at 1020W at a cost of only $800 instead! we also chose a different design with less front glass - the corinthian slimlite 202

Hi guys. Thanks for this thread, all interesting. I think I agree that if people are going to break in, they will find ways through windows. I was also concerned about how to attach a security / flyscreen door to the front door... (we are in bushfire area)... :th:

We are currently looking into the Corinithian pivot doors too - the Infinity range.

ivory_kitten - so is it that all the Corinthian doors come in a 1020mm width door as well? I have been looking at the Corinthian website and couldn't see any middle of the range doors (eg. 1020mm). Do you recall which ranges?

Yes most of the Corinithian doors (and also Hume too) can be specially made in a 1020mm wide door.

I am based in Darwin so our supply is from Adelaide, I just gave Corinthian directly a call to suss it out as it was easier to get the info straight from the horses mouth. They were most helpful. The person I spoke to said the Infinity range would be expensive to custom order because it involves so much timber, so if you want to keep costs down go for a veneer type door.

Thanks ivory_kitten!! That is most helpful. Our tender price includes a 1020mm door or a 1200mm door - whichever we choose. It's just that I couldn't find a 1020mm on the website. But I will do as you did, and give them a call direct on Monday. (I am thinking the 1020mm door might be a better option - hinges are less trouble than pivots from what I have heard, and maybe easier to fit on a weather strip and flyscreen? Which are bushfire requirements for us).

How far forward does the security door have to be to accommodate the small part of the pivot door when open?

Don't mean to be rude, but why would you spend extra on a pivot door, then cover it with a security door?

If I was going to break in to someone's house, I wouldn't use the front door.

Yes, good point. We probably don't need a security door on the front. My DH said the same thing that he didn't want a security door. We do however need a fly screen. we are in a bushfire zone so all external doors need metallic fly screens

OK, just to update this thread & supply a bit more info, have taken a few pics of our door & screen.

BTW, we did want a screen door to allow front door to be open & bugs kept out. Not that concerned with concealing main door.

To fit screen, a new frame was required to be made & fitted to brickwork.

We have a custom 1200mm door from Hume Doors. Extra hinges installed to support the door. It looks great! and IMHO achieves the wow factor usually associated with a pivot door (they all just tend be very wide), without the cost.

Also, IMHO it would be a shame to put a screen in front. Practically speaking though - well, I'll let you know if I cave in and install one after we move in.

Thanks so much for those photos. That fly screen doesn't look bad at all. Is it strong enough to act as a sort of security door too? DH and I were just talking today about how it will be good to be able to open the front door (but close the screen door) to allow the tunnel of air through the house for cross ventilation. And if it is lockable, then we can be in another part of the house without worrying about someone walking in (we have living upstairs). We are thinking now about the 1020mm doors. (Spoke to Corinthian today and as ivory said, they are custom made to that 1020mm size, but when hinged then they do accommodate a fly screen). hm... :th:

Hi SunshineT,

The screen is Amplimesh & has triple lock points so is very secure.

Screening isn't that noticeable specially from inside as my son's dog found out - tried to go outside with door closed & ended up headbutting screen

Main door is 2340x1200 so we needed a custom size screen door as they don't come standard in that size - $1600 :shock:

nrh - is that Woodlands Grey on the door frame? That is the colour we have chosen for all our windows, metal work etc. and we would use it on the fry screen too, if we decide to go that way... Quite undecided... ::wornout::
