Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 3Jun 28, 2011 2:43 pm Skirting board should go down before the carpet is laid. The skirting issue you have, is one of the reason why it should be done first. Undulations in the slab are highlighted when fitted last, as your photos show. Either that, or the skirtings aren't straight. I would be consulting the builder on the gap issue, as it is not the carpetlayers issue. The main future problem is if the carpet has to come up for replacement, or for other reasons, it is one hell of a job to get the carpet out from between the carpet-gripper and the skirting. And a major problem in relaying carpet again. as the carpet gripper is under the skirting and needs to be removed and new carpetgripper nailed at the correct distance from the skirting, to lay new carpet. Skirting damage is highly likely when trying to get that gripper from under the skirting. The join issue is the layers problem though. Thin loop pile carpet like that, is tricky to join, as there is not much pile to hide it. Just needs extra care to get it right the first time. In the photo, the first join one, are there ripples across it? They should be able stretch them out. Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 4Jun 28, 2011 3:03 pm Thanks for the link, Amadio. Mark, yes - there are ripples. i did think it probably wasn't stretched properly. If the carpet is removed, new smooth edge installed in the proper place and then recarpeted, is it likely this will fix the problem? maybe i need slightly thicker underlay(?) Otherwise i don't see how it can be rectified without ripping all the skirtings off - which will be a big job to repaint etc. Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 5Jun 29, 2011 9:44 am xquisite If the carpet is removed, new smooth edge installed in the proper place and then recarpeted, is it likely this will fix the problem? No. The skirting is still too high for the carpet. And getting the carpet and gripper out is a problem xquisite maybe i need slightly thicker underlay(?) The carpet gripper is still the same height at the wall. The underlay finishes at the gripper. Thicker underlay will just dip down to the gripper at the wall. xquisite Otherwise i don't see how it can be rectified without ripping all the skirtings off - which will be a big job to repaint etc. This may be your only option. Unless the builder can come up with an idea of filling the gaps. [not silicone, please] Mark Re: Carpet Laying Issues - Please Help! 6Jun 30, 2011 10:59 am Thanks, Mark. Of course what you say about the underlay makes sense - i forgot that. I'm sure they can theoretically come up with a gap-filler - even some small quad. However, it won't solve the issue of not being able to change carpet in the future.
