Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 25, 2010 8:59 pm Hi All, I'm new to this website and learning the ropes. We are about to start building our 4th house. I think I have finally decided on colours for my kitchen. I want chocolate colour cupboards (to match our chocolate dining setting and buffet) and would love to have Jerusalem Stone diamond gloss bench tops, but the 2 cabinent makers I have visited to date have advised against using diamond gloss in the kitchen as it is easily scratched, which shows in certain lights. I was just wondering if others have used diamond gloss for their kitchen bench tops and if they have found that it scratches easily??? I would love to go against their advise and go with it, which would mean I'd just have to be more careful with it. What do you think? My alternative would to be go Stipple Seal (similar colour, but just a solid colour/no pattern). My other question is, does anybody know which colour laminate colour would match my chocolate wooden furniture (by Diamond Creek) the best? Burnished Wood features in several Laminex catalogues (which looks the same colour as our furniture), but the sample chips aren't quite the same. They appear to be more dark grey than chocolate??? Anyone else have chocolate wood furniture that they've managed to match up cupboards with nicely? Apologies for the long-winded enquiries. Thanks in advance..... Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 2Oct 25, 2010 10:57 pm I had the same advice about diamond Gloss. I was going to have in my pantry and laundry but have decided on something from the natural range. We had been told that it is pretty hard and quite scratch resistant. Although I think we would have rolled the dice with it anyway. We have chosen Lunar Stone and are using that in the kitchen and the bathrooms. Hopefully it turns out nicely and keeps well. I am sure it will scratch to some degree. I had originally chosen black diamond gloss but have gone totally opposite in colour as a lot of people said that any scratch or mark would show much more and I'd be constantly cleaning it .... and that seemed to be the general concensus on this forum too. Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 6Jun 03, 2011 11:03 pm We had black diamond gloss benchtops in our kitchen and they were great and looked fantastic as well....we had the house for 18 months and there were no noticeable scratches. If you looked really hard in certain lights, you could see very fine scratches, but you really had to get down to eye level with the bench to see them When we went for our selections, they had a sample of it there and my DH asked if he could test it for scratches which they agreed to, so he scratched it as hard as he could with his car keys and we couldn,t see where he had scratched it. We did this because we were also warned against getting the diamond gloss, but maybe they were thinking of the regular gloss benches We found that Windex glass cleaner was the best product to use on the benches We,ll be going for diamond gloss again in our new house Cheers Mel Building on 9 acres Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 7Jun 04, 2011 12:28 am The advice directly from Laminex is that diamond gloss finish is scratch/scuff resistant, but certainly not scratch proof. It is not as hard wearing/scratch resistant as Laminex with Natural finish... however diamond gloss is more scratch resistant than the previous gloss finishes that used to be available. As someone already mentioned, try taking one of the little sample pieces and run something across it - that gives a good idea of how much it can handle. Diamond gloss is definitely the most popular finish for laminate benchtops, it just takes a little extra care. Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 8Jun 04, 2011 8:38 am Ahhh that's more like it!! We were originally going to go black too. Pretty much the same as the kitchen on the front of the Diamond Gloss brochure. It didn't end up fitting in with the rest of the selections we made. I had my heart set on Jeruselum Stone diamond gloss but was talked out of it by all the cabinet makers in town. They all said that whilst it is harder to scratch and mark than normal laminate, the scratches and marks are more obvious and show up more noticeably in certain lights than what they would with normal laminate. So I guess it also comes down to how much light your kitchen will get and from what angle, and where your most useable bench space is??!! I'll still be using it in our laundry, bathroom, ensuite etc where surfaces are used less often and are least likely to be scratched. Another decider for us was that our island bench is over 4m long which means there has to be a join somewhere, and apparently the nicest and least noticable join is achieved with the granite transformation...or so we've been told! Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 10Jun 04, 2011 2:41 pm Seriously we have had it in our laundry for 4 years. I have 4 children. We are not careful. It doesnt show scratches easily. Ours is Kasmir Granite. Not sure if they still make it or not. But I love it. Couldnt recommend it highly enough. Unlike my c'stone which is chipped. Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 11Jun 05, 2011 5:14 pm we got a gloss for the breakfast bar in a dark colour. they put the removalist packing boxes straight on it...arrghggh! so we didnt start off well, as thin scratches can be seen in 'certain' light.. and if you squat down, but since then we have put a few more on with a lap top! we have burnished wood too..it is BROWN/ BLACK not grey I would say. I love it. we have it as a fridge unit, side of bb and then gentle beige (off white) for drawers and cupboards LOVE IT and when that B B is totally scratched up I will just get some different laminate and cover it. wont be too exy I recon.. I would buy it again, knowing it has hair line scratches now..cos at night with light on it you cant see them. it is only day light really. Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 12Jun 06, 2011 7:47 am I had my benchtop done in Pure Mineralstone Diamond Gloss almost 3 years ago now, and I cannot see a single scratch on it - not even hairline scratches. I never really considered that it would scratch and have taken no special care. The morning sun shines straight on it and that shows me that it is dirty/streaky but has never shown up any scratches. I could not be happier and many people are fooled into thinking it is caesarstone. Hope that helps! Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 13Jun 06, 2011 9:21 pm We have a diamond gloss benchtop and as a splash back in our caravan. We are currently living in our caravan whilst we build. In the sunlight I have noticed very very light mark where hubby keeps throwing his keys... however because it looks like granite you cannot notice it unless the light hits it one way and only at eye level. Its really easy to look after and looks good. It is also getting a good workout and so far is working out very well. Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 14Jun 08, 2011 7:34 pm I don't think that Diamond gloss would scratch easier but I would imagine that being a smooth, shiny surface the scratches would be more obvious to look at. If anyone has Lunar Stone I'd love to see some pics! ALSO IF YOU GET TEXTA ON THE BENCHTOP DOES IT COME OFF EASILY?? Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 17Oct 09, 2013 11:28 pm Hi everyone! This is my first post Today I went to the Laminex Group and saw all the samples. I ended up bringing home 'pure mineralstone diamond gloss' and 'Avignon walnut' in natural finish. I hope the combo work well together. I am a little concerned about the possible scratches but at the same time I know the other options have some issues too. I will cross everything and hope for the best! It's been great reading the posts on here as they give me some hope thanks everyone Re: Diamond gloss bench tops for kitchen 18Oct 11, 2013 6:03 pm We put pure mineralstone Diamond gloss in our last house. We sold it so only lived with it for 8 weeks but I didn't find it scratched. But I did notioce the watermarks. You couldn't just wipe it with a wet cloth. I found glass cleaner best and wipe with a paper towel. I'm not a clean freak but it had to look good for open homes. This worked well and wasn't a hassle really. I'm getting stone in my new house but I'm puting the pure mineralstone in my laundry. Love it.
