Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 May 19, 2011 7:34 pm Our plans call for specific measurements, and I'm finding unfortunately that the sizes are not standard. It seems it's a lot more expensive to get windows made to order, than to use standard stock - and we have to have timber - so not cheap. I'm trying to figure out how much difference it will make if I go to the closest standard, as opposed to what is in the plan. I've already had a chat with the certifier, and he's ok with small changes in general. I imagine it shouldn't cost more to install, as the build hasn't started yet so the builder will start the job knowing what windows will be - so that shouldn't be a problem. Aesthetically will it look ok? - I can't get hold of the architect to check if he had specific reasons for the sizes he put down, or was just going with what he thought would look good. Most of the changes are 100-200 mm difference, but it might go from changing a square to a rectangle etc And the other thing is, we have a top level, and the windows were specified to be 900 high - the closest standard I can find is 1200. There were places that had a standard of 1000 but the width was all wrong. On the lower level there were some 1200 high windows specified, so I'm wondering if I can't go higher than 900 up the top as they won't fit? Is there a standard height from the floor that windows have to be? If they can't go higher, because of the roof overhang (or something?? - if only I could get hold of my architect!!) then can they just be installed 300mm lower? Any input would be really helpful Re: Changing window sizes from the plan 2May 19, 2011 10:35 pm Window companies quote to the nearest standard size, and that is usually brick opening sizes. The first floor may be a problem as the height needs to take into account the overlooking rules, and the restricted openings. We make windows to whatever size and the software knows no standard sizes. Australian windows are physically tested to AS 2047... for wind rain, and ultimate strength. Size depends on use... and the tests. That's the law of the land, and the law of mechanics.
