Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 May 17, 2011 8:56 pm Hi, Just a quick question - I am about to lay Travertine Tiles (honed & filled) outside...around a pool (pool coping/pool area) and also my alfresco area. Should I go with a water based sealer or a solvent based sealer? Is there any advantages/disadvantages of either? So far pricing seems to be on par so not sure which one to go with. Thanks. Agent 009 Re: Travertine Tiles - water based or solvent based sealers? 3May 18, 2011 10:22 am I have Travertine in my ensuite... I would strongly recommend not trying to save any money in this area. I used a cheap sealer and it made the stone look streaky and cloudy. I had to get stripper and scrub it off which was back breakingly hard and took four days solid labour. In the end I went for the best I could find and used DRYTREAT is went on easily and came up a very nicely. http://www.drytreat.com/ Re: Travertine Tiles - water based or solvent based sealers? 4May 18, 2011 11:48 am I've got two quotes off tilers. One uses a water based and the other uses a solvent based. They didn't mention which brands they use. They are both charging around $10 per square metre. I have also got a third quote from this company: http://www.nulifestonecare.com.au/ They also charge around $10 per square metre. I have 60m2 so looking at $600 for someone to do it for me. Otherwise I gotta spend close to $1000 on DryTreat and do it myself! Anyone used nulifestonecare? How does one seal tiles themselves? Do you just paint it on (ie. use a roller?) I'll go with DryTreat if it's that much better. What do you think? Re: Travertine Tiles - water based or solvent based sealers? 5May 18, 2011 8:25 pm Dry treat is a good quality sealer but extremly expensive for there main sealer which is Stain-proof origional and if you apply it yourself the 15 yr warranty goes out the door the warranty is only valid with an accredited applicator but in saying that i wouldnt trust any 15 yr sealer guarantee regardless of brand, CSIRO testing etc the two sealers i use are drytreat for swimming pool applications and miteq for all other paving, stone applications Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: Travertine Tiles - water based or solvent based sealers? 6May 19, 2011 1:39 pm Ok, I've received a few quotes from accredited applicators who can seal my tiles using DryTreat. Only thing is I've been getting mixed responses from them in regards to which DryTreat product to use. The first guy said Stain Proof is fine to use around pools and SK40 is not required. The next guy said definitely get SK40 over Stain Proof, especially around pools. I have 60 square metres that require sealing. 25m2 is the pool coping/pool area and the remaining 35m2 is the alfresco area (which joins on to the pool area). I'm thinking of either getting SK40 for the entire 60m2.....OR....SK40 for the 25m2 (pool coping/pool area) and Stain Proof for Alfresco area (35m2). Davinci, or anyone else - what do you think? I've read both descriptions for these products on the DryTreat website and it sounds like both products are suitable for my requirements....so which one to get???? get them to replace the chipped tiles. It will stick out like a sore thumb overwise. Also tiler will be siliconing the miters rather than grouting.
