Their health officer (nice guy) forwarded me the WA Dept of Health asbestos for dummies guide, and it states "It is not necessary to coat asbestos cement products on health grounds. However, the application of a surface coating may extend the structural life of the products, and improve their appearance." I'll still feel better having at least our side sealed. So has anyone had any experience with different brands of sealers? I'd appreciate any feedback. However each council makes heir own decision I suppose There are quite a few paints (check out your local paint shop) that would seal asbestos however I do not like the fact that it is exposed to open air. Do you have children? I would make my neighbour sign a liability clause. He may not like it however if he intents on maintaining the fence he has to be responsible for future consequences. Re: Best product for sealing an asbestos fence. 5May 19, 2011 8:06 am Its an interesting angle, but I can't imagine: a) ever getting the other party to sign such a document, and b) actually being able to construct a document that would hold water legally. Back to the topic, does anyone have any feedback on specific brands of sealant? Re: Best product for sealing an asbestos fence. 6May 19, 2011 11:38 am I painted ours with fence paint from bunnings and a cheap sprayer from bunnings. This was a few years ago now and it's held up fine. I think anything that coats it at least keep the fibres in place. We did get rid of the capping though because it just looked nasty, it was very black and bugs were just breeding underneath it anyway. edit, if it's in good condition I wouldnt worry too much but obviously if it's got that blackish sloughing off look about it then you wouldnt want it around and best to get rid of it. Re: Best product for sealing an asbestos fence. 7May 19, 2011 2:50 pm Thanks Piscean, Our plan is to just seal the fence and then build a fresh pretty fence out of rendered hebel or fastawll brick in front of it that is in keeping with the courtyard that we have planned. So I reckon that a decent quality paint should suffice. In the interest of avoiding open warfare with our neighbor, I won't touch the capping. It'll stick get a lick of paint though. I think just some regular exterior paint will be the go rather than expensive specialized sealers. Re: Best product for sealing an asbestos fence. 8Jun 15, 2011 3:29 pm Hi Avion, I can't understand why your neighbour doesn't want the fence removed especially as you've offered to cover the expense...I reckon if you just went ahead and did it he wouldn't take you to court. Even if he did, I wouldn't think asbestos would get much of a sympathy vote. That aside, I have painted asbestos in my home with a sealer called gripset exterior waterproofing paint. Bunnings tell me this brand has recently been bought by 'Betta' waterproofing paints. They offered another product called 'Crommelin' exterior waterproofing membrane, comes in grey or white. It is extremely flexible, elastomeric, and UV resistant and also recommended for asbestos. I also reckon you could use emerclad flexible membrane coating, and you could tint it to what ever colour you like. Just remember, the more flexible and UV resistant, the longer it will last and you won't have to worry for another 10-15 years, as long as you use a good primer first. hope this helps camelia Re: Best product for sealing an asbestos fence. 9Oct 26, 2014 9:25 pm an answer without opinion - use Sealant paint - try and spray it on. same stuff you'd use for concrete - as recommended and used by my building inspector. as i am about to venture into a similar project. Make sure you wear gloves and a mask of some sort. Happy Painting! Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. I am saying that double brick has similar thermal performance due to thermal mass effect.
