Browse Forums What's New 1 Mar 09, 2011 9:37 pm Has anyone used Structural Insulated Panels (or SIP's) for residential construction purposes? I stumbled upon this product via a Homeshow Exibit recently and have become very impressed by research ive done so far, i cant find any negative points about using these panels that enable me to have a house thats R6 insulated, reducing noise factors, excellent fire rating, reduces labour costs/time during construction = saves money both short time and in the long run when i dont require constant air conditioning in summer and avoid huge heating bills in winter. My only hesitation seems to be that not many people have heard of it and seems to good to be true. Has anyone experienced this type of building material or know someone who has, what has been their experience?..Cheers! Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 2Mar 18, 2011 11:29 am I too would be very interested in any information! there is some discussion over on the ata forum: http://www.ata.org.au/forums/topic/stru ... t3d-pan3ls Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 3May 04, 2011 11:30 pm I built a house from Structural Insulated panels based upon my own research. I know from the company that provided the panels that other places have been built in Canberra and Victoria and Western Australia. I believe that R Control Australia are building units in Western Australia right now.
Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 4May 04, 2011 11:34 pm Looking at all the houses built in the USA and now in the UK from SIPs, it is a growth product, proven, used for many years, just new to Australia. With all the concern about sustainable building and the cost of energy, it seems to be the difference between an 8 and 5 cylinder vehicle. The LCA of a house built with SIPs, shows its cost over a lifetime, as well as the fact that it retains or increases in value, is another consideration. The house in Canberra took a week to build and SIPs was used for the floors, walls and roof. Good luck. Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 5May 05, 2011 7:26 pm I am building my house in Melbourne with SIPs I would be happy to provide any information or point you in the direction of my builder for any tricky questions. Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 6May 05, 2011 9:07 pm is this paneling system anything like hebal paneling, apparently this is a steal reinforced concrete type material, just found out about it and would love to learn more about these alternative building materials Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 7May 06, 2011 10:10 am our house will also use some Hebal in the design on an area that is cut into the ground. I am guessing its due to the better water resistance. Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 8May 06, 2011 6:24 pm there are different types of SIPs. I am currently looking at panels with an MgO (magnesium oxide, the new alternative to fibro) skins and an EPS core from PanEco. sounds good, but I wonder whether anybody has build with this type of material & would be prepared to comment. Interested in all aspects: pitfalls, cost, speed of construction, ..., the good, the bad & the ugly cheers! Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 9May 07, 2011 2:20 am Yes same here, i am specifically looking at someone that is building or has built and their experiences, cost vs "normal" house construction and any pitfalls. Also would like to know if the spiel about cost effectiveness once you are living in a SIPs house in relation to minimal heating/cooling, maintenance and building times. thanks all Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 10May 24, 2011 7:55 pm http://www.sipsindustries.com.au/home.php I put my DH's name down at a seminar in Perth to find out more about this product and if there are any builders in Perth who are willing to work with them or if we build through SIPS Industries???? Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 11Jun 28, 2011 9:11 am I am just about to start the design process for a new house near Hobart. The main criteria is to build a fully insulated box that will retain heat. With SIPs how is the interior surface finished, is is a factory finish with joiners or do you apply your own finish material such as sheet plasterboard Alan Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 12Jun 28, 2011 10:27 am Alan, That depends on the "skins" of the SIPs - those with OSB either side seem to need a plasterboard cover (and an external lining). If the SIP has a metal skin, you'd probably want to cover it with some lining on the inside too; for a fibro/MgO board skin, you could just set the joints & paint it. Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 14Aug 14, 2011 5:20 pm I am in Victoria and am interested in SIPs but would like to see something built using them. below is a post from think_wise.. re think_wise "I am building my house in Melbourne with SIPs I would be happy to provide any information or point you in the direction of my builder for any tricky questions. Would like to see them insitu. How much $m2 comparisons to other materials. are thre any issues/negatives using them. thanks Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 18Aug 23, 2011 7:12 pm I'm seriously looking into doing an OB using Paneco, these were the SIPs recommended to me from Barry at UBuild & after a bit of investigation I must say I'm impressed. Apparently they are $89 per sqm cheaper to use than conventional building materials..... Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 19Aug 24, 2011 7:56 am Hi Pauankim I too am seriously thinking of using SIPs and have been talking to Andrew at PanEco. I am trying to gather as much info as possible and want to be able to see the panels in situ. I live in victoria, so finding SIP built projects is not easy. If anyone out there has built using SIPs, I would appreciate being able to see them. Thanks Re: Use of Structural Insulated Panels 20Aug 24, 2011 10:02 am We are also looking into building with SIP.. Are there any similarities between SIP and Hebel? Isn't both of them made of concrete material? Good questions but the best answer will be obtained by visiting (ie: interviewing) a couple of house designers and/or builders and ask them. You may find it challenging to… 2 3236 Assuming you've modelled the TB8, TB10, TB12, TB2 & J1 joists/LVLs there, it appears as per drawing to me. There maybe should be an additional J1 between TB10 and T12 if… 3 31835 |
