They are the original timbers and we are not on a slab and our house is quite cold. My husband hates carpets, but I would like to add them to the bedrooms. I do prefer the timber floors throughout the rest of the house (we have a dog who spends a lot of time indoors) Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 29Jul 21, 2011 11:03 am If this house is just for you, and you like wooden floor boards in the bedroom then make it so. However, this is the increasing home value forum and it would be my advice to carpet the bedrooms as it seems to be the more generally unoffensive option. The fantastic thing about your place is that if a floorboard lover wants to buy it then it's easy enough for them to pull up the carpet and have the boards underneath. Options are always a good thing! Personally I have lived in homes with carpet in the bedroom and also floorboards in the bedroom. I am not fanatical about either of them one way or the other as both have their pros and cons.. but in living areas floorboards are a MUST! The lounge and kitchen rooms are currently white porcelain tiles Any advice is great Thanks! Hi perthhandyman, We just answered this exact question on another thread, so we will post the same answer here for you (we are not trying to spam ) It's a very common question, one we are asked everyday. Generally, the majority of installations we do would have hard floors in living areas only, be it timber, laminate, vinyl or tiles and the vast majority of people Australia wide prefer carpet in their bedrooms. There isn't a hard and fast rule, but if you are interested in resale at a later date, then we would say go with the forumula that works for most people and you will find more acceptance from buyers when it comes time to sell your home. Best wishes for your project. I'm not overly fond of the look of carpets, but they do feel nice underfoot, and while we'll be having wood laminate through the rest of the house, we'll most likely go with carpets for the bedrooms. However, I've come to the conclusion that what I hate about carpets is that they are often a light colour that tends to look pretty dirty and yucky over time, and they are hard to maintain. So I'm looking at getting a chocolate brown or charcoal grey coloured carpet for the master bedroom to take it slightly away from the basic creamy (dirty) carpets I'm used to. I also think quality of carpets can make a huge difference; all the houses/apartments we've lived in so far only has the most basic carpets, and they do nothing to impress. But if you look at some carpets that you find in display homes, they can look (and feel) amazing. I have seen some great looking wood floor bedrooms though, but unfortunately I do find them "cold" (physically and mentally). I HATED it, didn't feel cosy, was chilly under-foot in cooler months and showed up every bit of dust. It's a personal thing of course but I wouldn't do it again. Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 34Aug 26, 2013 8:26 am Yes, I know it's an old one... No carpets for me... I hate them, the are so not hygienic and most of all... I'm allergic to dustmites! My allergy got worse since I moved to Australia... because there is carpets everywhere. I can't even go to the library for more than 10 minutes, because it affects me so much! Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 35Aug 26, 2013 5:24 pm gonecountry showed up every bit of dust. Yes it's kind of a pain but at least you can see it to clean it. It grosses me out to think how much dust was in our last house that had carpeted bedrooms. You didn't know the dust was there. - now Free Renovating our 1970s home Re: Wood floors for the bedrooms 36Aug 30, 2013 9:19 pm We are having timber floors in our bedrooms. The only rooms in our build that have carpet are the theatre and study/spare bedroom. I've lived in houses with carpet and timber in the bedrooms and I much prefer the timber. Yes, you can see dust but at least when you clean it it's clean. Plus we have inside dogs and the fur is a nightmare to clean from carpet. We do however live on the north coast of NSW so our winters are at the coldest about 15 degree during the day and very short timeframe. I dont like tiles (harsh under foot), although I am heavy footed!, cold and unforgiving. We used to live in the snowy mountains so I had carpet in bedrooms, family (mistake) and lounge, rest was floorboards. Everyone commented on how lovely they were (even when it was 1 degree outside! As for the carpet, I went the most expensive carpet I could find due to wearability and keeping that lovely "new" look. After 4 years though, I think it didnt look much better than cheap carpet in the traffic areas. I must say I am a fixed carpet disliker. I also have a husband and daughter who have asthma and its recommended that they dont have carpet. I find carpet is dirty, and smelly (especially with small kids) and unless your prepared to have professionally cleaned every 2 months and vac every day - its a no brainer for me - give me floorboards. Note I did say "fixed carpet". I love rugs and will be having a rug in each bedroom for the kids to sit on and play. I am in the tender/contract process of building my new home and have chosen to have floorboards throughout. I am also a fixed carpet disliker as its harder to keep clean and maintain that new look. As well as this I also have bad asthma and suspect my future children will also inherit this from me (unlucky) so have chosen to completely ditch carpet. My partner and I were initially looking to buy a house and were planning to rip up any carpet and lay floorboards or laminate instead. A house with all floorboards would have definitely held greater appeal and value to us! So I think when it comes to adding value to the house for some buyers it will but for others it wont. I don't think there is a set rule! Goodluck im sure whatever you choose will be beautiful!
