Thats the pricing which will be an outright winner with the public. Unless someone sells quality products at that price, it will keep LED lights for residential customers out of their reach. Re: LED vs CFL vs Halogen Downlights User Choice? 14Apr 10, 2011 10:51 pm $50 / unit seems like a reasonable sort of price-point. The problem is that you don't need 1 or 2 lights in your house, it's more like 40 or 50. Realistically you'd be needing (say) 4 in a bedroom ) there's 16, say 4 in the hall, there's 20 and we haven't looked at kitchen / family room. Given that these (or similar) lights are mandatory in most (all ??) states now, demand will be escalating letting the first suppliers (manufacturers) charge a premium price, however as other suppliers see the increased demand then more products will come to market and competition will see prices fall. Unfortunately, as it is now, the few (decent) suppliers can charge these higher prices until more competition comes to market. So yeah, No more then around $50 (for a quality produce) seems fair ................. P_D . I bought a Brightgreen D900 LED fitting as a trial and it is very impressive, but at over $100 and 13W, it doesn't really compare to a Jupiter 5 or similar CFL downlight for $30. At $50 LED would be closer to the mark. I think I will use the D900s in the media room where I want dimming and CFLs in other locations. Paul Re: LED vs CFL vs Halogen Downlights User Choice? 16Apr 11, 2011 2:19 pm I agree $50 would be a good price point to aim at, the biggest issue for us being a supplier is that unless we sell direct to every house which is quite tough, then there will always be a markup from a reseller, so the price I have to get to is around 20%-30% under $50.00 which just isn't viable for a full light replacement. We are looking at getting close to that price with a 35w replacement (500ish lumens) which is still a good chunk brighter than most of the products claiming 500lm. Re: LED vs CFL vs Halogen Downlights User Choice? 17Apr 11, 2011 10:48 pm think_wise I agree $50 would be a good price point to aim at........... I'm working on the theory that the "First Generation" of Plasma TVs were over $20,000, the "Second Generation" (where we bought ours) were around the $5,000 mark, and now they're around $1,500 - ish (or less) ............. Given that LED's have now hit their straps, the equivalent if you like of the "First Generation", it cannot be too long before 2nd and 3rd generations are with us, hopefully at similar price reductions. China's own producers are also ramping up; expect LED prices to plummet over the next five years. |
