(prob not granite as too much work...sealing, re buffing, scratches etc but anything else!) couldnt afford it. so went 100mm thick laminex Re: What have you had to compromise on? 6Mar 11, 2011 6:36 am Extra storage at the back of the island bench (it's 1.5m deep) so wanted access both sides. We also wanted a breakfast bar, so chose the breakfast bar in the end... our cupboards from the kitchen side are still 1.2m deep (not that I have anything that is 1.2m long!) and we've got extra storage elsewhere Re: What have you had to compromise on? 7Mar 11, 2011 8:23 am I wanted a 9m long x 6m wide shed at the end of our driveway. Looking to start a project car in the next 3-4 years. Ended up extending the garage by 4m on one side (L shape kind of) and we'll be getting a smaller 3x5-6 shed just for tools and small work area. Also wanted stone benches and polished concrete floors, ended up getting a Schweigen hood (would have had to give that up)and laminex with tiles and an upgraded caret for same $$ as builder stuff privately Re: What have you had to compromise on? 8Mar 11, 2011 8:31 am I would have liked a glass splashback but couldn't justify the cost to myself. A shmicko rangehood would have been nice too. There are other things I would rather spend that money on, and I won't regret not having them - that's what compromise is all about! Re: What have you had to compromise on? 9Mar 11, 2011 8:35 pm star-anise I am realising that it's all about compromise. I want a big pantry and a wall oven...but I can't do both. So I spend hours agonising over which to sacrifice. Whatever I chose, will I later be ** off about??! What compromises have you made, and did it work out ok? Thanks I can't have my mosaic splashback apparently it will cost around $8k OP if you are still deciding between the wall oven and the big pantry DEFINITELY have the big pantry, you can still cook the same things in an under bench/freestanding oven, but you can't store everything in a small pantry! Re: What have you had to compromise on? 11Mar 11, 2011 10:10 pm kiwi acrylic stone, c stone or anything cold as a bench top. I would have it over any other material for a kitchen benchtop 1) will take heat 2) will not stain from pencil or niko 3) can cut on it 4) properly installed will outlast any surface 5) will not scratch 6) any engineered stone in the premium ranges are dearer than buying granite 7) does not look like a toilet block over 1200 colours available The others you mentioned will melt discolour stain scratch Re: What have you had to compromise on? 12Mar 11, 2011 11:38 pm There have been a few things we have compromised on (not necessarily connected to just the kitchen)....... but now that I look at some of those compromises I am still VERY happy with our new home ........and in a lot of cases I actually think the 'compromises' we have made are actually a BETTER choice for us......and aren't necessarily a compromise now! I originally wanted stone benchtops but we decided an acrylic surface instead..... I actually like the acrylic surface a lot better than any of the samples I saw. It has come up really nicly...works well with our other colour choices and I like the fact that we can't see the join on the island bench. I would like to have had timber floors throughout our house but it isn't very affordable where we live so we selected Karndean Vinyl planks. I think we'll still get the warm, homely (yet modern) feel we like without the maintenance and care issues that may come with real timber. I don't see our flooring as a cheaper alternative but it was 'money' that steered us away from timber. Re: What have you had to compromise on? 13Mar 12, 2011 2:15 am We wanted draws either side of our UBO, but our changes were a little over our budget. Even though I would have loved to keep them, I figured I've managed with cupboards in the past and I probably won't give them a second thought when I'm living in the house. We've changed and added alot to the house to make it how we want it, I expected to have to comprimise on some things. If we bought an established house we would not have had the choice so I'm seeing ANY changes we make as a great privilage to have. star-anise I am realising that it's all about compromise. What compromises have you made, and did it work out ok? Thanks Just a thought...if you went a wall mounted oven, would that give you more under bench storage?? Also natural stone will be more susceptible to staining than the man-made stone, and needs sealing at least every 6- 12 mths. (but I see you have a product that would eliminate that) The lighter colours particularly are susceptible to permanent stains from wine, beetroot and oils, if left for a longer period. Also the polishing...like monthly with a good polish. Cant be doing all that! if you cut on it and you break the seal that is on it, (as most are sealed as they are porous) you are going to then get problems (and knifes would get blunt cutting on stone wouldnt they?) and so that was why I probably wouldnt do granite.....oh and also chips...like taking cups out the dishwasher, the cup doesnt chip, the granite does. Again another person I had heard from so I just thought..nar, give me c stone cos you also dont see the joins and you do on granite?? not sure if that is true..read that on a website. (if you dont have a big slab that is) but couldnt afford the 5- 8k for it anyway...my whole kitchen was only 8.5k!! (with bench, soft close etc) ha ha oh, and it is wayyyy heavy! but if you have granite and you love it and it hasnt done any of the above, kudos. But I know if I got granite I would have all of the above problems!! another compromise...would have loved a bigger wir and ensuite. ours is tight. but just not enough $$$ to enlarge the house anymore. Re: What have you had to compromise on? 15Mar 12, 2011 9:32 am I see everyone saying granite is work, and sealing, and stuff, but my mum had granite for years, and never had any issues with it, never needing sealing, never chipped, no stains nothing. just my 2c my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: What have you had to compromise on? 16Mar 12, 2011 11:31 am A wider island bench & a big pull out bin which meant storage would have been reduced. I managed to talk dh into vinyl wrap, draws all round, thicker stone, waterfall on the island & glass splash back so I can't really complain Re: What have you had to compromise on? 17Mar 12, 2011 10:57 pm Quote: if you went a wall mounted oven, would that give you more under bench storage?? It's all swings and bloody roundabouts! Yes, it would give more under bench storage but I want all food in the pantry, so the pantry has to be big enough. A wall oven cuts into pantry size a lot. Thanks for thinking of me though! Re: What have you had to compromise on? 18Mar 13, 2011 10:12 pm I lost out on a few things: * Butlers pantry.....despite 8 designs from 3 different designers, we just couldn't get a design that ANYONE thought worked in our space * 90mm oven. I got 75mm oven. Not too bad. * 90mm cooktop. I got 75mm oven. Not too bad. * Zip tap. First thing culled when budget went crazy. * Soft close drawers. Second thing culled when budget went crazy. * Waricorner unit. Third thing culled when budget went crazy. BUT, I kept Caesarstone bench tops, two F & P dishdrawers at waist height, removal of wall currently dividing lounge and kitchen, LOTS more storage space, BIG space for newly acquired ice and water fridge. So I'm happy to live without the withouts as the what I got list makes me happy That is a really good attitude Akin to you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
