Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jun 01, 2008 9:15 am HI Michelle.
We visited the granite benchtop suppliers yesterday and checked out the granite we'd picked for our benchtop and discovered we didn't like it at all. The sample we'd seen had a very even pattern to it which was lovely BUT on a large piece there are big black spots in random spaces. It seems when a tree grows through the granite and fossilizes it makes big black spots. sigh... didn't like the effect as all on the beautiful little dotty grey /black and white stone. so we've picked a brand new colour. Thank goodness we decided to pop in and see if they had a large sheet of the granite or we would never have known about this quality. Anyway the upshot is we will need new splashback tiles and a new laminex cupboard door colour. Thank goodness we haven't gotten to prestart yet or it would have been a cost variation. Anyway the new colour from Absolute Stone is called "pampas" So now we will be looking for an creamy white colour laminate. The lovely lady suppler provided me with a sample and I've got my camera with me so I might be able to up load a photo. Yes it does have greenish tinges but with the right colours it looks more gold/brown and deep grey ou can also see the original "graphite' choice in the paper pamphlet. The real sample ( 10cm x 20cm) we'd seen looked like that too. I t did look excatly like the picture except that in a large ( 600 x 1.5m ) sample there were these huge 20c piece sized black spots. so suggestions? we are hoping to visit somewere with laminate displays while in perth today so we don't have to spend ages looking for a laminate next saturday. Finding a new tile splash back will be painful enough. so if anyone would like to comment.. go for it Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: kitchen laminex colour suggestions. 2Jun 01, 2008 1:37 pm Hey I really like your new colour choice, out of the samples I can see there I reckon it's the colour I would have chosen too. Certainly would be very disappointing if you found out only too late that the previously chosen one didn't look anything like the sample!
Similar with us, we chose all our colours, and then I had 2nd thoughts about the kitchen (particularly white cupboards). So we ended up with completely different colours the 2nd time around - half an hour before the pre-start appointment, but we are much happier now. In the Formica brochure I have here they have a similar colour benchtop paired up with black cupboards & caprum (rusty brown?) splasback as a suggestion. I guess dark colours would really bring out your benchtops without making it stand out too much. I think like you say the creamy white would still give a nice transition and highlight it a bit more. I know when we were choosing the general guide was, dark tops & light cupboards or light top & darker cupboards. Hubby is not a fan of all white or any black. Personally there is nothing like comparing the sample combinations side by side. And I'll leave it to Michelle for the pro's opinion! Re: kitchen laminex colour suggestions. 3Jun 01, 2008 3:25 pm I also like your sample and if you are looking for a creamy white you could try Polytech cafe cream. It was our first choice in laminate cupboards and is a soft pale cream colour but not yellowish if you know what I mean. It also comes in a sheen which is easier to keep clean.
If you look at the polytech site you will see it on there ... although it is much darker on the website than real life. It has a bit of a greyish base. I'm sure Mish will have other suggestions for you. We also changed all our kitchen selections as our builder changed supplier late in the game and we had the option. So we went from soft cafe colours to black and silver. Nothing like choice to throw all your selections out the window . Good luck and looking forward to seeing your final selections. It looks like what we have in th bathroom, powder room and ensuite. I dont know the name of the doors but I think the light colour ties in nicely. This is our powder room. Stay away from a colour; so to speak…..keep with the light neutrals only. By staying in the light neutrals you are allowing your Granite to take the stage…in your kitchen. Like Paula’s vanity! yes a real departure. The other possibility was calico , an off white, warm creamy colour. If it hadn't been going with wood capping and cork flooring we would probably have gone this way. We did need to choose between laminex and Formica for our cupboards. We are not going to upgrade to anything else and they were the only choice in manufacturers.. I do love Paula's white cupboards but since there is not a white sink in the bench top the white looks out of place. Plus we want to bring in the timber capping and cork flooring. we will also still be having the black nickel bow kitchen handles and a black ceramic electric cook top. There was a section of the flooring we have chosen on display at the home centre as well so we were able to take our possible cupboard choices, plus the bench sample and some "jarrrah" and put them together. there was even a jarrah trim feature around our chosen cork. so we've decided at this stage to stick to black cuboards and possibily 3 x 10 cm square black splashback tiles. Provided we can stll get a shiny black tile. From memory we had seen a pefect tile to fit the requirements. We'll see what we find next saturday when we can visit the tiling places we have to choose from. In the top pic you can see the 2 posible choices we came down to. Now it's a matter of finding a tile to go with it. The bench will still be a highlight bu it won't be a complete focus which is more the look we were going for. It will look great with a cork floor and the handles you want. Paula Re: kitchen laminex colour suggestions. 9Jun 02, 2008 9:38 am Thanks Paula i do love that really creamy colour you picked too. We might go back to it yet. will reply properly later. Am using my Mobile atm
DH also commented that we have the cork flooring as a feature as well where as in the bathroom pic you supplied Paula the flooring is quite light. The black will provide a divider between the 2 strong feature aspects. If we'd added another warm light colour it might have been too much.
