(North point usually pionts up the page) Not a biggy but we do need to know where north is - Nott was assuming your veggy patch was going to be shaded by your house in winter. Great to see someone with a clearly defined concept of what they want. You have the vision so I am sure you will get there. You are doing the right thing too by putting it on paper and getting feedback. Most designs do evolve a bit from the initial concept, I think the bamboo grove idea is great. Due to the natural walling effect of the culms I reckon you could hide/ partially hide another outdoor room somewhere amoungst the culms as a reading area/ garden retreat, possibly with water of some sort. A scupture of some sort somewher in the bamboo grove is a must too for mine. Be wary of the shade cast by the bamboo regards the veggy patch too. Checkout some Tiger grass for a bit of variety mixed in. Ya I wasn't thinking when I took a photo of my drawing about the north being up! As for a so the thought on another outdoor room, I have had thoughts as it would really be hidden and a nice place for some peace and quite in 'nature'! Sculpture is on the wish list also! Im looking at Tiger Grass as I type! Cheers. NO EXPECTATIONS, NO DISAPPOINTMENTS! It's a dense clumping palm to about 3m tall, cold tolerant, great for screening. It likes a sunny, moist, well drained position, but will need shade when young. It will break up the view of the fence, add to the tropical look and of course block out a bit of that roofline. You can try several different palms, mixed with things like Canna (Indian Shot Plants), gingers, monstera to continue your tropical feel. I've just done a very long post on palms for Melbourne, so you can have a look there and see if there's anything that takes your fancy Re: Our Landscaping Plan (now attached) 18Feb 14, 2011 10:56 pm I would design some pathways through the bamboo grove, to create a walking trail past / to the features in the yard (sculpure, water feature?, garden retreat, temple?, vege patch etc) Maximise the grove concept. Make sure you have listed and included all the features you want and need in the yard - good design is both functional and aesthetic. (cooking area?, spa?) Dont need to have a full lighting plan but may want to consider a rough one so that you can drop in conduit etc during construction. Irrigation too. Though, if you have the creativity and time, I would instead create some mysterious ancient ruins throughout the grove. An intact pillar here, a broken pillar there, a half buried broken statue or wall somewhere else... I'd definitely go more informal with a bamboo grove, ensuring that the paths were 'natural' and worn by walking feet rather than built, twisting through the bamboo. Any advice on how to ensure the kit home granny flat that im thinking of buying will get council approval.
