Managed to dig up yet another funnelweb last night when removing agapanthus. That was 3 females, one with spiderlings, in a 2m sq area. Didn't expect so many so close to each other. I feel bad for disturbing them when I'm pulling out aggie roots as they just want to be left alone. Poor spideys! Re: A massive thick black hairy spider - help! 28Feb 11, 2011 8:01 pm I would say it was def a trap door spider. I am also in Doreen and saw one a few weeks ago in the corner of my yard, in the loose clay. It was so big I didnt feel like I could even kill it, something like trying to kill a small cat with a shoe!!! I now try to stay away from that area and hope it is eating other things I dont like. It did go under the fence when someone else saw it -maybe over to your place Re: A massive thick black hairy spider - help! 29Feb 11, 2011 8:08 pm deb my husband is an arachnaphobe and he comes from a family who is the same. I guess my pro spider attitude has rubbed off on him though because he won't kill them anymore and gets me to move them outside we get quite a few window spiiders as well and he'll even swat flies and feed them now so even though he doesnt want to deal with spiders he does get that they are they are mostly harmless and doesn't want to kill them. I totally understand being afraid of spiders but I try to see them for what they are just living creatures going about their business and they aren't out to get us and I think that made a big difference in my own attitude, like I said I hated them growing up but as I got older I just got to see them for what they are and to me they are no different to a lizard or a bird who visits my garden and I accept them now Re: A massive thick black hairy spider - help! 32Feb 11, 2011 8:18 pm I wish I could be like you and my Husband, it's terrible being so scared of spiders. You have trained your Hubby well, I don't know how you did it. My Hubby is a Picses and I am a Scorpian, i'm sure it has alot to do with the star signs. He gets really annoyed with me when I say "kill that spider" but honestly I couldn't stand the thought of going to bed, not knowing where the spider had gone. I was once driving to my Friends after leaving the gym, I felt something trickle on my face, I am not a person that sweats, so I pulled down the mirror and my worse nightmare came true, one of those furry spiders was sitting just above my eyebrow. I drove up the nature strip with my hand on the horn, it was horrific. I flicked it of my face and drove like a maniac to my friends Hair Salon, she came out with a tin of hairspray and we sprayed the car, couldn't find it, but I have never really got over it. Re: A massive thick black hairy spider - help! 33Feb 11, 2011 11:23 pm It's not the big huntsmen you have to worry about - they are fairly harmless. It's the redbacks and funnelwebs that cause the problems. I was at the zoo with my 4 yo DD and looking at redbacks and she goes "there is one of those in my sandpit" Got home, and there it was....... For 5 seconds and then it was dead Re: A massive thick black hairy spider - help! 35Feb 12, 2011 12:39 am Classic thread!! Reminds me of a few years back when my Mum found a large hairy spider in her car but it disappeared before Dad could locate & remove it, mum has a HUGE fear of spiders & told dad if he didn't find it she was selling the car Car was sold 3 days later, she never stepped foot back into it Cooper's Build - Perth NOR viewtopic.php?f=31&t=30525 Prelim- mid Sept 2009, Pre Start 2 Feb, Siteworks- 21 April 2010, Slab- 10 May, Deliveries- all by 26 May Bricking- 28 May - 26 June, Roof complete 5 Aug, Float 28 Aug, Lock up 16 Sept Cabinets 1 Oct, Tiling 22 Oct, PCI 18 Nov, KEYS 3 Dec 2010 MOVED IN 17 DEC 2010 Re: A massive thick black hairy spider - help! 36Feb 12, 2011 8:23 am piscean ...I try to see them for what they are just living creatures going about their business and they aren't out to get us and I think that made a big difference in my own attitude... bj76 I would say it was def a trap door spider. We sprayed and sprayed it and a Woman passing on the street made a comment that she had ants too. Re: A massive thick black hairy spider - help! 40Feb 12, 2011 11:05 am We've got redbacks all around the place we're living right now...we've killed three in the garage in the past couple of weeks. There was one in the letterbox this past week too. At least they're small and don't tend to roam...they just sit in their webs. Now white tails on the other hand...rrrrr... The warning is on the sticker on the door too. Second the aluminium powdercoat 6 18412 Thankyou for your advice.
