Browse Forums Owner Builder Forum 1 Jan 10, 2011 1:02 am Hello all, I am new to the site. I am wondering if there are any O/B blogs or forums posts around detailing a person or couple that has built their own house. By this I do not mean that they have gotten an OB license and hired a bunch of tradespeople, I mean physically doing most of the work (obviously some things require qualifications, but many do not). Any help would be appreciated, thanks! Re: Looking for self-builder blogs 2Jan 10, 2011 7:17 am hi asher1 and welcome to the forum Have you had a look through our owner builder section? there are a lot of threads in there telling the stories of our members' OB adventures. I don't follow that forum in a lot of detail but some of the people who come to mind that may have done some of their own work are kristofw, bingoshelley and chippy... maybe have a search for some of their posts/threads. good luck, and we would love to hear about your own OB experience too! Re: Looking for self-builder blogs 3Jan 10, 2011 7:58 am add T &V to that list. He did a lot of the work himself but I would say Kristofw and Bingoshelley have the most pics and details. Re: Looking for self-builder blogs 4Jan 10, 2011 10:11 am hi asher welcome we have done everything (as the others mentioned above) only tradies so far were the roof guys plumber and electrician to come now warning lol unless you are poor as a church mouse dont do it all yourself its a nightmare honestly if we werent broke we would have used as many tradies as we could afford and the next house will be obed but using tradies for as much as money will allow dont get me wrong we had no experience yet still managed to build a fantastic house but we made a few mistakes and by the end of it all i estimate its cost us about 10 grand more in mistakes and inexperience we still saved an absolute packet we were quoted 260 to build but will do it ourselves for 80 but that is doing everything from foundations to frame ect ect and dble the time you think a job will take and you may be close. jobs i wouldnt pay anyone for in future are wall wrap, painting, garden shed, windows, flooring, decking and a few little jobs anyone can do these there easy but structural, doors (yuk),cladding, verandahs, footings ect forget it i wish you well whatever road you take its stressful and heaps of pressure just dble that if your not using tradies stay safe happy building Re: Looking for self-builder blogs 5Jan 10, 2011 10:32 am spot on Bingoshelly. We have used trades it is bloody stressful as well. I cant even begin to imagine how horrendous it must be if you are doing it yourself. The wieght is falling off me with the stress! Re: Looking for self-builder blogs 6Jan 14, 2011 1:31 am Hi All, as Bingo says - the more u do the more u save, but be prepared to work. i also do a lot of the fiddly stuff that tradies charge a fortune for - eg 3.9 m australian sheoak natural shape bench devider - took me over a year to find the piece of timber i needed, took months of work getting it ready to install - again goodness knows what it would have cost thru a builder, jarrah beams the same. to have our house builder built i am told by a builder friend ( who wouldn't work for me cos i'm to fussy he says ) would have been around $660,000, even with lots of extras in over budget items it came in at just under $400,000.
in the 40 odd years of o/bding i've been involved with, i only know one other person who has done the amount of work that Bingoshelly & her man have done, but look at the assett they have built - an outstanding result, & if they do this again in 7 years time i'm sure they will be well rewarded both financially and in personal satisfaction. BTW i was just the oposite to Kayandandy, the more i worked & worry the more i eat - i put on weight while building, swiming now to get my shoulder strength back & dropping a bit of weight...... have a go - shed a few tears, enjoy it and love living in it....cheers tony Re: Looking for self-builder blogs 8Jan 24, 2011 12:48 am I'm not building an entire house but I am building an extension and garage plus doing a full renovation of an existing house (including re-trussing/replacing the roof). Honestly the amount of work to be done is astounding, however like others here I'm saving a ton of money and I get to ensure that the quality is up to scratch. I try to update my blog every week or two, you can find a link to it in my signature.
