Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jan 23, 2011 10:35 pm I was in some high end display homes today and noticed that they All had extractor fans directly above showers. No heat lamps. They had downlights for lighting. Do you have a combination of 3in1 and downlights? Or just downlights and an extractor fan directly above the shower? They all had large mirrors. Is this why the extractor fan was right above the shower. Should I be worried about my large mirror being foggy all the time with my 3in1 unit in the centre of the bathroom? I have no downlights in my bathroom (or indeed anywhere in my house for that matter ). Bathroom has a 3in1 heat, light, exhuast thingy and another separate light over the mirror . Quote: Should I be worried about my large mirror being foggy all the time with my 3in1 unit in the centre of the bathroom? In my experience, No, no need to worry. - I have 3in1 unit in middle of room and shower is corner shower and mirror is not foggy after showering if the exhaust fan is on. Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 3Jan 24, 2011 1:56 am Hi, Unsure what they were doing in the exhibition homes, but they tell you point blank in the installation leaflets that these units should not be installed above the shower recess. Cheers Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 4Jan 24, 2011 5:59 am I'm not very keen on 3 in 1 units as they are very hard to fix a backflow prevention device on. I prefer separate fans and lights. Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 5Jan 24, 2011 8:30 am It's all personal preference, but I much prefer to have an exhaust fan directly above the shower and seperate lights. In both homes I have had, there have only been seperate fans directly above, and I have never had a problem with mould or foggy mirrors. (Old house was over 40 years old and there was not one patch of mould in the bathroom). Mum and Dad have the 3in1's in their bathrooms with high ceilings and I personally don't really like them. They have also had problems with wet walls, foggy mirrors and mould in the past. It makes sence to me to have the fan directly above the shower and extract the steam at it's source, rather than wait for it to enter the rest of the room and then extract it. I also have heating vents in the bathroom for when it's cold in winter, and that works a treat! I have never had wet walls, foggy mirrors or windows, and the windows are usually closed when I have shower. The bathroom/ensuite remain steam free. I always dry myself in the shower recess anyway (warmer!) and have no need for the heat lamps to heat the top of my head when I get out of the shower!! Can you do both? Or is it an option to put a heating vent in the bathrooms (if you are having ducted heating) and seperate lights instead? Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Is this why the extractor fan was right above the shower. Should I be worried about my large mirror being foggy all the time with my 3in1 unit in the centre of the bathroom? The mirrors would not be their primary consideration. The fan is to get the steam out, end of story. Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 7Jan 25, 2011 9:07 am ^^^^^ If the fans is working properly then the mirror won't fog up as the fan will extract all of the stem. I'm pretty sure the 3 in 1's aren't meant to go above the shower directly. FWIW you can get a heat lamp/light combo without fan if you want the heat lamps and then just get an extractor fan for above the shower. Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 8Jan 25, 2011 9:28 am if a three in one doesn't work properly or any other fan for the matter its because there is not enough air going into the room. Ie the gap under door may be to tight. The location of the fan doesn't matter as long as it is in the roof. If the fan needed to be above the shower then to use this theory our ducted heating wont work very good. Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 9Jan 25, 2011 6:16 pm chrisandkate I'm pretty sure the 3 in 1's aren't meant to go above the shower directly. Correct, 3 in 1's should go outside where you stand to dry, which BTW is the only time the heat lamps should be on. They are wasting power if on whilst you are showering as their ability to heat a room is poor as they are intended to heat a person directly under it. Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 10Jan 25, 2011 6:26 pm I think we have this extraction thing under control in our bathrooms. We have and extractor fan directly over the shower, a 3 in 1 in middle of the room, lights above the mirrors and a heating duct too!! My bathrooms don't get steamy, mouldy or cold! Oh and they can be lit up like a runway too if I want!! Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 11Jan 25, 2011 7:04 pm I agree with Stormy,I have exhaust fan over shower plus 3 in1 have never and I mean never had mould or fog on mirror.I do leave fan on while I dry myself, when builders started puting 3 in 1 in they did away with fan over or near shower. With high ceiling I don't think 3 in 1s work that great[only an opinion]ps i also have duct in main bathroom in winter i use it.

Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 14Jan 26, 2011 8:37 am To tackle the airflow problem in our bathrooms I fiited an exhaust fan and a wall mounted 30cm fan. Leaving the window open helps with airflow, pulls air from outside that goes up into the ceiling. No 3-in-1 combo fitted here-things would be bad if I needed a heater in Darwin. Result-no mould, the walls stay dry and it always smells fresh in the rooms. Oh and they can be lit up like a runway too if I want!! Just like my setup, FB ...only we didn't get a heating duct installed (I should know better than to listen to my husband when it comes to heating - I swear, the man is part eskimo ), so we have a nice simple panel heater on a timer. When I swan into the bathroom in winter, it's a toasty 21C. And then I turn the overhead heat lamps on as well. Bright.... The heated towel rails (also on timers) make sure the towels dry too. No steam or mould here either. Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 16Jan 26, 2011 10:49 pm Thank you all for your responses. We will stick with a 1in3 in the centre of the room. Fingers crossed that we don't get any mold Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 17Jan 28, 2011 10:19 am kek .... The heated towel rails (also on timers) make sure the towels dry too. Wish I'd thought of heated towel rails. Although with all the heating I have in the bathroom, the towels dry quickly even in winter but they're not toasty warm. Re: Extractor fan directly above shower 18Jan 28, 2011 10:33 am I have a 3 in one in the centre but we will be putting another fan closer to the shower entrance come winter when we don't have windows open. The fan doesn't cope without windows open bugger!
