Straight-line kitchen...anyone got one?

We've recently purchased a two storey Victorian terrace in Newcastle. It will be a rental until the end of the year when we relocate there. This year will be full of designing, changing my mind, designing, changing my mind (you get the picture!!).

My first question I want to put out there in the homeone world is.....does anyone have a straight-line kitchen? Pictures would be wonderful!

hi virginia, and congratulations on your purchase!

just wanting to clarify what you mean by a straight-line kitchen? are you referring to the layout, kind of like a galley style kitchen, as opposed to one that turns a corner or on an angle?

Great kitchen Rizzo! What I mean by straight-line is just one line...no island, not galley. The area we have is about 2m wide with a sliding door on one wall out to a small courtyard.

Do you mean one bench with sink/oven etc. 2m is not that long.

ahhh, I get ya. My friend had one in his apartment. The area wasn't very big in both directions, so he had a little island bench, made with the same laminates as the kitchen and looked like a normal island bench, but it was on wheels, so when you needed the access to outside you could move it over or wherever, but it gave you that little extra bench space

I doubt you will be able to fit both a sink and a cooktop in that space. (assuming you're having and under bench oven and no dishwasher.)

ahhh, I get ya. My friend had one in his apartment. we used to have a butcher's table which sounds a bit like this, only smaller. in fact it's still in the garage... square, stone inset on the top for chopping/bench space, a drawer underneath and compartments for shelving below. cost about $250 (quite a few years ago though).

The width of the room is about 2m hence a straight-line kitchen with no island...the length of the room which the kitchen would be along is about 5m. In my head I can see that by having the sliding door of the courtyard along one side it wouldn't feel so closed in.

I want to be able to see how people might have spaced their appliances and the sink to have enough bench space but not have the sink and stove right next to each other. A mobile workbench is definitely a solution although I'm not sure even that would fit.

I'll try and post a couple of pictures when I get the chance. It's been over a year since our last reno and I have to remember how to post the things!!

5 metres sounds a bit more workable! would be great to see some pics. could you do something on a side wall as well? so your bench space could turn a corner?

Well, I would put the fridge at one end, the pantry at the other and the sink closer to the fridge. I would probably go for a single under-mount sink to minimise bench-space loss, and consider a slimline dishwasher. Perhaps look for one of those stovetops that a cover can be put down on, or which can be installed flush with the bench, again to maximise space.

Here are some photo's of the kitchen. They are real estate ones and the only ones we have at the moment. This area was built on to the terrace about 25-30 years ago. The courtyard is fully enclosed with it's only access being through the sliding door. Ideally we would like to keep the angled area for a table also which is why we are thinking a straight-line kitchen.

I love renovated terrace houses! I grew up in an inner city terrace house but unfortunately it was in "original condition" complete with outside bathroom and loo. The transformations that some people accomplish amaze me. If only my parents had the vision (and money)!

I had a look on the sold/for sale terrace properties on the Domain site and found these -

1. This one is in Cooks Hill (Newcastle area) and looks like it has a very similar layout to yours

2. This one is in Redfern Sydney - I like the way they made the area look bigger by using the same flooring in both the kitchen and courtyard

3. Another one from Redfern - not sure about your floorplan but if your kitchen is at the rear of the house you could get rid of the courtyard and increase the size of the kitchen and perhaps put french doors at the end

4. Redfern again - looks like they may have had a passage/courtyard which has been enclosed with a skylight roof and another skylight added

Wow! Nerak...what great comparisons...I can guarantee you that there are points in each of those kitchens/layouts that my husband and I will be using! Thank you so much for taking the time to do some research...what a lovely surprise!
