Browse Forums Windows & Doors 1 Dec 17, 2010 6:06 pm I wonder if anyone could advise me about the best way to treat a timber window frame made from untreated pine. When the builder made the 600x600 frame to support glass bricks...he used 140 x 45 mm pine but it wasn't cca treated (don't know why as it exposed to the elements).is there any special treatment I can apply (eg;wood preservative) or should I just paint it with an oil based paint? Re: sealing exterior window frame 2Dec 17, 2010 6:27 pm If the frame is in position and you can't paint the whole frame then using a preservative stain is probably the way the best way to go. Give it a few coats so that it soaks into the wood as far as possible. The builder didn't use CCA as this is really only a preservative for garden wood rather than in part of your house The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: sealing exterior window frame 3Dec 17, 2010 6:39 pm Thanks Bashworth....I know the window isn't in contact with soil, however, it is subject to moisture and due to its location (semi-detached house therefore limited access on neighbours side) it's not easily observable or accessible without neighbour's permission. I have put some copper based timber treatment on it but that won't last that long if it's exposed. Re: sealing exterior window frame 4Dec 17, 2010 7:07 pm I used a timber stain on all the woodwork on a new house. al the work required was to reapply stain every 4-5 years. Only work was quick brush down with a stiff brush and then apply stain. Very much easier to do that once every 4-5 years than all the preparation required for a painting every ten years The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: sealing exterior window frame 6Dec 18, 2010 12:08 am Hi Not Estopol which is a varnish. Something like Deck and exterior stain. Cabot do a water based stain which is OK or an oil based one. If you have not put anything on the wood yet the water based one should be OK. If you have allready put something like CCA on you might be better with the oil based one. You will not need more than 1 litre for the frame The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: sealing exterior window frame 7Dec 18, 2010 8:22 am the copper napthenate solution is in a light organic solvent...I saw something online called "spa-n-deck" for outdoor areas around pools etc. it's acrylic based. might be longer lasting than the cabots? Re: sealing exterior window frame 8Dec 18, 2010 9:09 am Sound Ok to me but I only have experience with the cabots The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: sealing exterior window frame 9Jan 09, 2011 8:34 pm DO NOT USE ESTOPOL!!! lol you can buy a arsnic based product to help treat the timber but its pretty full on stuff, and if the timber has already rotted then its all but too late This is 100% true. You can not hang anything on steel frames. very frustrating 8 5346 Its the flashing and is normal. Some builders cover them up others just leave them handing. You can cover it up with an aluminium bracket or ask the builder. 7 11215 1 14470 |
