I'm sure you have more experience with me in this matter, but....... A leveling compound may well provide the required smooth surface. But ceramic tiles are fairly smooth and I expect there might be an issue with the compound not adhering well to the smooth tile surface, because of their shiny surface and also, oily soiling. If it was to be done, I think thorough cleaning of the tiles and an acid wash might be required firstly to prepare the surface. Also, the overall height should be considered, (tiles + compound + underlay + carpet). Any thoughts? Ash. Re: Carpet over tiles 13May 09, 2008 10:04 pm Yeah, there are some issues to consider, my advise is general and I was trying to keep it simple (saves typing)
Yes the surface would need to be clean. Ardex A45 can be used unprimed on many surfaces. Some smooth tiles may need a neoprene primer. If the floor is hand trowelled you will only be filling to voids or low spots. The aim would not be to build the height. Re: Carpet over tiles 14May 09, 2008 10:28 pm OK, so from what I'm hearing from you (as well as my own thoughts on this) to do it properly will require (ideally professional) cleaning of tiles, and an acid wash or other prep to make the tiles ready for the levelling compound.
Then to install carpets with a gripper installation, the smoothedge will have to be fitted by drilling and plugging, as it can't be nailed into tiles. With all of the above ...... why bother! Better off getting a contractor in to remove the tiles, then smooth & level the floor, and install the carpets, (IMPO)! Ash. You wouldn't need to professional clean in 99% of cases. You can nail into the grout between the tiles - I'd also use liquid nails or a PU adhesive. As an example I trowelled 3 bags of A45 over a ceramic floor unprimed for a laminate - cost $165 in materials and took 2 people 1.5 hours each. I can't comment on what's best for the floor in question as I haven't seen it. Re: Carpet over tiles 16May 09, 2008 11:25 pm HF123 royalblue With all of the above ...... why bother! Ash. Reason I say professional tile clean is from professional experience, most tiled floors have a film of grime/oil/detergent residue, both on the tile face and in the grout. Mopping and DIY cleaning just doesn't cut it, and I think this may compromise the adhesion of any compound. Also 'nailing into grout joints' assumes they are where the smoothedge needs to be. Liq nails or adhesive is not sufficient. Drilling & plugging would be required to have a solid smoothedge that can hold decent tension. 1 16133 Levelling compound Ardit is the best but buy a bag of sand and make sand dam to protect your wood floor 2 15397 To put anything over slate you will need to put self level compound over the entire area as slate various in thickness and is very un even.
