Don't quote me on how accurate my assesment is though It's mainly a guess. It is a small tree of 3 - 4m with a papery bark and those lovely flowers, so I'm guessing I'm at least in the ballpark. If you need more info on what to do with the soil and after transplanting let me know. Re: Any hope in transplanting a mature Melaleuca 5Nov 10, 2010 4:51 pm I had to eliminte a mature magnolia and a large (4m) rhodo. The extraction work was so drastic I thought both would die, so was not gentle ! The stump of the rhodo was so heavy I tried for weeks to lever it out of its pit. In the end I sawed the stump in half. In all it was exposed for maybe two months. I replanted it anyway, and this spring it's going absolutely nuts with new growth. Likewise the magnolia. I chopped it down to a stump of maybe 0.5m (from a tree of 5m). It's also going nuts in a very poor hole I shoved it in. Survival of the fittest. Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves. - Dale Carnegie Re: Any hope in transplanting a mature Melaleuca 6Nov 10, 2010 10:17 pm Fu Manchu Have a go if you have to. Nothing loose by trying. I suspect we will either just cut it right back (however, it'll look stupid if we do), or just take it out completely. It is too big to move easily, and is quite close to a driveway and brick retaining wall. I can't imagine that we'll be able to get a clear shot at the rootball. Thanks again, Chris Re: Any hope in transplanting a mature Melaleuca 7Nov 10, 2010 10:35 pm Cabinfever ...I replanted it anyway, and this spring it's going absolutely nuts with new growth. It is nice to hear of success stories. I did note that you are in tassie, and I've heard that there in quite a decent amount of good soil down that way. I wonder if that helped with the survival? After chatting to my wife about the proposed move, she simply frowned and stated she didn't think it'd work. I'm inclined to agree. We might just lop of the troublesome branches and hope it doesn't look too silly. If it does, we might just get rid of the entire thing and plant something similar a little further from the drive. Thanks again, Chris Re: Any hope in transplanting a mature Melaleuca 8Nov 10, 2010 10:42 pm One of the evry best examples of that plant I have seen is on City Of Joondalup property and is cared for by the council. It over looks Ocean Reef Boat Harbour and is along a pathway. Nothing but a road between it and the Ocean. It is clipped to about 300mm wide, stands 3m tall and sits in limestone and below a limestone wall of 2-3m. Looks amazing and with all the salt air, crap soil, young punk vandals, and limestone around it makes you realise just what an undervalued plant this is. I guess we don't see them much in nurseries because no one has bred a version and copyrighted it Re: Any hope in transplanting a mature Melaleuca 9Nov 10, 2010 11:47 pm Yeah, I really like them and that is why I wanted to save it. I've seen a few around that and I just like the papery trunk, the flowers and the general look of the tree. Hopefully, if we do end up losing it, then I can find another at a native nursery. A question. Im in Queensland and building a new home. We managed to reach practical completion 6 weeks ago but we haven't heard any date for handover yet. Who should we… 0 6093 i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits. There's only one… 7 12970 I am looking at building a house. Has anyone used Construkt Homes (based in Adelaide)? Does anyone have experience with this builder? 0 6493 |
