Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 104Oct 07, 2010 6:44 pm No turf is perfect and they ebb and flow with temps and moisture. Do the right soil prep and any turf will be a sustainable addition to a garden, not something that does your head in. Just awful to see people getting rubbish lawn advice in nurseries, junk lawn products, poor fertilisers, ripped of by cowboy lawn contractors, and poor soil prep advice from even credible sources and see them get disheartened and do away with the turf in time. The big picture result of adopting plastic grass as the answer is not a pretty one. Adopt the Fu Manchu way of getting soil right, caring for the soil and maintaining your turf and you will for ever be glad you did choose a turf and never be a slave to it Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 106Oct 07, 2010 8:12 pm No worries Fu, I reckon ozbreed should pay me for their free trial Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 107Oct 08, 2010 7:15 am I just wanted to update this thread too. We put Palmetto down last spring/summer and I have been super impressed with how it's first winter went. Very little browning off - I would say the majority of it was still green. Where it had and in constant traffice areas - I used some of Fu's tips (I also used his soil prep tips ) and in 2-3 days it had sprung back to life. Now with a bit of sunshine it looks fantastic again. So thrilled with it My karma ran over your dogma Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 108Oct 08, 2010 8:34 am Good one Haywal, just curious did your Palmetto cop any frosts? Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 109Oct 08, 2010 8:37 am Yep, we are in Melbourne's west and there were a few days in winter that I really thought we were in trouble with it, but to my surprise it just kept on keeping on. I should get some pics up My karma ran over your dogma Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 110Oct 08, 2010 9:13 am We also laid Palmetto back in March and followed Fu's prep plan (mostly) and the lawa has survived the cold wet winter really well. It only browned off in little bits here and there so overall i am very impressed. It is starting to green up more now that we are getting some warmer days/nights Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 111Oct 08, 2010 10:35 am Thanks haywgl and lissyloo. Pal seems to be performing as advertised. A mates SW went ok over winter except for a few dead patches from repeated heavy use. But that will come back no worries. Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 112Oct 08, 2010 2:50 pm And you can bet if you guys had not followed my advice or methods, you would not be likely to see the recovery you are Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 113Oct 27, 2010 1:33 pm Fu - the area I've built in has kikuyu in basically every yard... the land was all Kike before it was dozed and built on.. if I go and do all the soil prep and then lay EZ, what are the chances of the neighboring properties sending Kike runners under the fence and eventually that crap invading my beautiful EZ lawns? Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 114Dec 11, 2010 1:01 pm EZ is safe with DSMA or Paspalum killer, but it kills Kikuyu with a couple of applications, so with these chemicals you can control Kikuyu. Make sure you follow label directions. It generally takes at least 2 applications spaced over a couple of months of growing season. Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 116Oct 05, 2011 8:30 pm The emerald kikuyu I planted last year is starting to spread nicely, I did plant it mid summer so it hasn't had that much of a growing season yet. Looks great, hasn't gotten into any garden beds yet. Runners are nice and compact, finer then normal kikuyu leaf blade. This is looking very promissing, all the info on the munns site is accurate, very impressed. There is only one down side, you can't seem to buy it as turf. Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 117Oct 05, 2011 9:48 pm Good one Jetson, it does look very promising for the melb climate. Re: Appropriate turf for Melbourne 118Dec 27, 2012 1:20 pm Hi Fu, I am in Hoppers Crossing, Melbourne west, just planning to put a new turf both for the front and backyard. I and my wife had planned to put Kenda kikuyu, empire joysia etc. Please advise which will be the good one based on melbourne climatic conditions and maintenance. And also, in this string you advised to VP about the supplier of Empire joysia who supplies 9.50sqmts including delivery. Please provide their contact details if possible. Thanks in advance.
