Browse Forums What's New Re: LED Downlights: to LED or not to LED, that is the questi 23Oct 04, 2010 10:25 pm MrsGreen I thought LEDs were for use where you need very direct lighting not general lighting... am I incorrect? I need to start looking at our electrics for the house plan but I don't even know where to start All I know is I hate houses with 1 light in the middle of a room so that no matter where you sit you can't see what you are doing/reading. Like all lights there are many choices, the LED stuff is much more in it's infancy than incandescent and fluro solutions. There is still quite a large selection even so, including strip lights, wall splashes, wall lights. The selection is much lower than standard lights, but improving. I am going to select some for my house, and I am seriously considering a wall splash using RGB so I can change to colour of the room. Re: LED Downlights: to LED or not to LED, that is the questi 24Oct 04, 2010 11:06 pm I've never heard of a wall splash, what is that? I intend to use the LED step(?) lights up the stairs, and strip lighting for the walk in pantry and walk in robes. As for the rest i've got no idea what is best... and to think I'm married to a sparky, lmfao. He was asking me last week if the LEDs could run on one transformer these days hehe. He loathes transfomers! For clarification, he works with industrial scale products (the mines)... residential is not his thing. Re: LED Downlights: to LED or not to LED, that is the questi 25Oct 04, 2010 11:36 pm i would use LED's if they were bright enough. we have them underneath our overheads in the kitchen and they are a lovely warm colour and quite bright. I am getting the lights through a place called AUSLED. Found them at the Cairns home show. DH always wanted LED but i couldn't find much out there that wasn't merely accent lighting. You need to look at a number of things if you want room lighting. 1. Beam angle 2. Luminosity, lumen output, luminous flux or just flux. 3. colour temperature A broader beam angle will give less of that "spot light" effect, however if the colour temperature and flux are too low the light will be quite yellow/orange and not bright enough. My sparky told me about a downlight by Pierlite called the Starburst (I just had the specs emailed to me today so if you want them PM me with your email address). I have since spoken to a couple of people in the trade who have seen them in action and they are equal to or slightly brighter than a 50w halogen. They are 12W (plus 4W 12V transformer) come in fixed or gimbal and are dimmable. We have decided not to go with these as there lumen output is not as high as the lumen output of the 12W ones I have found with AUSLED. Also their colour temp is only 3000k so a bit yellow for my applications. The lights I am getting are 240V recessed lights (not downlights) and are NOT dimmable. Again if you want t know more PM me. I have found all this out just from my (hours of) research. The companies probably make no difference to me as i'm in WA, but I am keen to learn what I can. Thanks. The companies probably make no difference to me as i'm in WA, but I am keen to learn what I can. Thanks. My understanding is that the recessed light is the whole light. A downlight is a fitting and a bulb. I have had an enormous amount of help from the accounts person (you would think it would be the sales person) where I am getting mine from. I expect they will ship where-ever. PM me if you want the details Mrs Green. We want to put them throughout the house so we need about 50 of them. My husband is an electrical engineer & he looked at their efficiency etc , he reckons they are the best thing that happened to lighting in terms of efficiency etc, but the prices everyone is quoting is way too much, in Sdney they range any where from $50.00 to $110 installed, we're getting the $110.00 variety as they are good quality and use Phillips globes, so I strongly suggest that anyone who is interested in these to do some shopping aound and even if you got them from Sydney & shipped them to whereever you are in Oz, they won't cost $180.00 each. I guess after this year all new houses will have to use LED or CFL if they want to have downlights as BCA changes. We ended up going with the 16watt brightgreen ones. Cost us $140 each. They have a nice blended light which isn't as harsh to look directly at as other LEDs. Which ones did you use, the Warm White or Cool White ? What spacing did you go for between the wall and the LED and also between LEDs ? With the benefit of hindsight, was that a good choice, or might you of put them closer / further apart ? Thanks, P_D (BTW, Did you also use them in bedrooms / study / loos ??) .
