I wish we could have afforded real timber boards, but then we wouldn't have window coverings or a driveway. Sometimes you've got to compromise.
We will have real timber and no window coverings or driveway

True, but we have NO trees and the neighbours are subdividing into 1ac blocks...wonder what they'll think when I go out to the clothes line in the nude to get some clean nickers (why else would you have 20ac) Deemaree Kyndylan Capers: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=46852 My blog: http://www.sufficientlysufficient.blogspot.com/ Re: Never pass up a bargain 85Sep 19, 2010 2:47 pm Might be a lot of and not much . The stuff you already have. I'm working on this today: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'm just giving it a dark stain and some satin sealer, plus new drawer handles. I was going to add small brushed steel pulls to match the bedside tables, but have changed my mind and now I want to swap them all for something different. I need to go shopping tomorrow - I don't think Bunnings have what I want.... I did start slapping on stain yesterday, but had a small setback and needed to pull out the Citristrip this morning , but it's all going well now. Hopefully I'll have it done by Tuesday - I can't handle my clothes being piled all over the floor. Re: Never pass up a bargain 88Sep 26, 2010 7:17 pm No, I haven't finished the tallboy yet.... I just spotted something on eBay, and wondered if any H1-ers in Melbourne might be interested in a similar dressing table to the one I restored? This looks to be from the same era, although it doesn't have the carved details - but some appliques could be added easily if you want that look. It's a pickup only from Thomastown and so far has a leading bid of $2.25, and the auction finishes in under an hour. I'd grab it myself, but my husband is already grumbling about the clutter in the garage from the tallboy and the lamps and the chair and the desk.... Or a French Prov look would work well too. Re: Never pass up a bargain 90Sep 26, 2010 8:22 pm Ah, you missed it. Unless you were the one who bid $20.50 for it.... Re: Never pass up a bargain 91Sep 26, 2010 9:53 pm looked like a great deal kek. I'm sure who ever got it is thrilled. sadly there just aren't those kinds of deals to be had here in the west very often at all. I'm sure who ever got it is thrilled. sadly there just aren't those kinds of deals to be had here in the west very often at all. That's a shame... There seem to be plenty of lovely old unwanted pieces around Melbourne. It's hard rubbish collection week in Kew and I had to restrain myself from stopping the car today and grabbing some amazing things. Desks, dressing tables, chairs (even whole sets ) and what appeared to be a perfectly intact Art Deco wardrobe. I might have struggled to get that into the Jazz though... I had a win though - I was outbid a few weeks ago on an Edwardian pot cupboard. But this morning there was a message in my inbox with a second chance offer. It seems the winning bidder hadn't bothered to make contact with the seller. So I jumped in the car and collected my prize before lunch. Which is why I was in Kew. Of course, it's a bit of a mess - it's been painted white....pale pink....blue....purple and then had silver leaf applied all over. That's a crime against antique furniture! I've stripped most of it off now, but I'm still not sure if I'll be able to stain the whole thing, or if I might have to paint the body and just stain the top. I'll have to wait for it to dry and hit it with the sander before deciding. The tallboy's still ongoing....the lamp bases are painted... the cupboard is stripped... Maybe I should just finish one thing at a time. Re: Never pass up a bargain 93Sep 28, 2010 9:23 am You amaze me Kek! I don't know how you find the time! I still haven't touched my pine shelf after I undercoated it months ago, but once the kids go back to school and the weather warms up I'll be stuck in the garage! I passed a desk (painted mission brown) on a hard rubbish pile a few weeks ago and was so tempted, but it was on a busy major road and I had the kids in the car, and no where to put it... I don't know how you find the time! I still haven't touched my pine shelf after I undercoated it months ago, but once the kids go back to school and the weather warms up I'll be stuck in the garage! How do I find the time? Let's see... can you say O.B.S.E.S.S.I.V.E? No housework has been done - except for the jobs I made the kids do - and if my husband didn't cook we'd have been eating sandwiches for the past three weeks. Or takeaway. I have managed to find time to have a shower daily, sometimes I even comb my hair, and the pile of washing in the laundry isn't quite up to the ceiling yet, so I'd say I have everything under control. I've learned a few things though: 1. If you're stripping paint, buy plenty of throw-away plastic dropsheets and save every newspaper you can find. And those boxes of 100 disposable gloves. You go through way more than you think you will. 2. Wear a proper dust mask when sanding old furniture. Otherwise you get to deal with headaches, asthma and constant sneezing, and lie awake because your swollen nasal passages won't let you breathe. 3. Be prepared for your muscles to be very unhappy with you after a weekend of sanding and painting. Stock up on Epsom salts (for the bath) and wine. I've stopped work temporarily because I can't unscrew the damn cupboard door. Might have to wait for my other half to get home. Thanks for the tips. I got three out, the other isn't budging. I had to knock off for the day anyway, I've had it. That sucks! Hope it all works out. Good to move away from steel anyway for all your reasons, but it's also thermally poor. 16 17857 |
