Acrylic Splashbacks

We were going to go with tiled splashbacks, as we are on a tight budget, but we really wanted glass. Having a look around these forums, I came across a few pictures of acrylic splashbacks:

This looks awesome, and would be considerably cheaper I assume.

I have a few questions however.

Firstly, does anyone know a place in Perth where I can find acrylic splashbacks? (i'm assuming these are tougher than just your regular acrylics, perhaps heat treated etc?)

That brings me to my second point, how heat resistant are they? I don't want it to start warping and bubbling after a few days of hot cooking. Acrylic's recommended 'service temperature' maximum is around 85 degrees Celsius. I can see this being a problem.

And finally, anyone have an idea of the costs involved in putting in an acrylic splashback?

Hey deeps, I believe you can view this stuff at G@lvins in Osborne Park. I think its called Acril....You only have a selection of their colours and I think you have to have electric cooktop not gas(not 100% on this point) and yes its alot cheaper than glass but I am not sure how much.

I've done a tiny bit of research on acrylic. It is cheaper than glass, but still quite expensive if you have a fair amount to cover!

You've got different brands. There's Acril as mentioned, there's Acryform, Zenolite, and Bunnings stock a range now, Bonethane or something like that. Am sure there are others, too.

If you have a gas cooktop, you need something like tiles or stainless steel panel behind it. Electric may be another story, not sure actually.

Thanks for that, i'll have a look at Bunnings today itself... Galvins in OP is unfortunately only open during weekdays, which makes it a bit of a pain

We have a gas cooktop, and don't particularly want to change over to anything else... The fact we'll have to have tiles or stainless steel behind it, might make it a deal breaker as the extra cost could hurt.

Is stainless steel generally expensive for splashbacks?

Most places seem to say that it's not ideal for near the cooktop, which seems like a deal breaker

I went to bunnings and looked at their range, i'll post the sizes and prices soon

Bonethane:

For a 1.2 x 0.76 piece it is $349.00
For a 2.4 x 0.76 piece, it is $599.00
For a 2.4 x 1.2 piece it is $929.00

That is not including installation. It is meant to be a DIY installation.

I'd rather get someone else to do it, though I might give it a crack myself...

Any other options out there?

I'll be following this thread deeps as we have a gas cooktop and we were getting acrylic installed - our cabinet maker assured us that it would fine behind the cooktop and hes never had a problem but I'm still having doubts.

Hey EKT, I was talking about Stainless for this answer....

I think you should check with the supplier of your acrilic regarding the splashback being used with gas. Our cabinet maker told us its a no go. I think its more to do with the warranty being voided but it depends on the supplier.

Deeps..did they give any indication about using the Bonethane with gas?

I forgot to ask. They said that bunnings had only been stocking the product for the past 3 weeks or so, so she didn't know much about it.

Anyway, after having spoke to the gf, who initially wanted glass (which is why i explored the acrylic path), she now wants to keep the tiles...

So guess that's mission aborted

Hope the prices and the little research I did will help someone else

Now to find a cheap caesarstone replacement

What size area is that for, if you don't mind me asking? I have quite a lot of area to cover in splashback, so I have a feeling I'd need to triple those amounts

Tiles it is! I just have to find some tiles I like now

Glad I stumbled accross this thread. I am not the only one struggling with splashback. Also pleased to see I am not the only one thinking tiles. Intresting to read about acrylic. I started looking at tiles and then thought glass was the 'new' thing but the price scared me. But I do have a gas cook top and don't want to go electric cooktop. So if the gas is a problem with acrylic may have to rule it out. Will investigate. Might end up going back to original idea of tiles - colour yet to be decided. Another minor anxiety attack involved in this up coming decision for me I am sure.

............after reading this thread I just googled "can I have acrylic splashback with gas cooktop" and the first result it gave me was this thread!

Did find this though: (cut and paste below):
You can have any colour you like (e.g. you can go to any paint store and choose a paint ... With any acrylic splashback, it can not be used directly behind a Gas cooktop, however It can be installed 200mm clear of the gas burner

Hi deeps, i came across a cabinet maker in Balcatta when searching kitchen reno for my parents place & sales lady was showing me their new splash backs, not glass but not entirely sure what product is. She assured me could be used behind any cook top at a fraction of the price of glass & the colours were very nice even some sparkly looking ones.....esp loved the champagne colour she had a large sample of!!!

If only i knew about this place before we had prestart....... def be using it for our outdoor kitchen!!

I have a question if anybody heard of the ULTRAglaze cabinet doors.
It's some sort of Acrilic glossy finish. I saw it at the Impala Kitchens showroom in Melbourne and it looks amazing. I just want to know all thepros and cons and the price comparing to 2pack or durapal.

We choose white cabinets with pure mineralstone diamond gloss laminate benchtops... I really wanted to add some colour in via a glass light green colour splashback (our apartment has a beach theme) because Im worried about cleaning tiles (which I hate doing at the moment) has anyone used the Bunnings Bonethane in their kitchen - was it easy to get installed, do you have to specify before hand where power outlets etc need to be cut?

I see no-one has answered you, I too am interested in the Pros & Cons of Bonethane which I have only just seen today at Bunnings.

I believe it is designed for a handy DIYer or a cabinetmaker. The cutouts are done onsite with, I imagine a jigsaw.

There seems to be some concern about the suitibility of the product behind a cooktop, in particular a gas cooktop.

The manufacturer / distributor needs a minimum 150mm from outer ring of flame to the splashback!

When I rang the distributor they stated that with the larger 2 sheet sizes they will, at your request provide a FREE glass insert 600mm(or 900mm if required) x 300mm x 6mm. For an extra $189 this can be 600mm high.

To me this would make the product very viable.

are you handy??

6mm toughened glass, prepped and self sprayed.....

we had nearly 3.5sqmt of glass splashbacks, best quote we had was $1750.00 installed

did the job myself for 450.00

was total of 8 pcs also,

so if it was say only 3 pcs heaps cheaper
