A cornice hides sins. You will find, just like eave less houses (which I hate with a passion) that it is all about style and personal choice rather than cost savings.[/quote] YES! Definitely more expensive and time consuming for the builder to do no cornices.... looks very nice though... As for the step up - personal preference.... some will some won't like - it's what you like that counts for your home Building on the Sunshine Coast - Land settled 22nd July 2009 Building contract finally signed (after much deliberation on our part) 11th November 2009 Building commences 25th January 2010 - small local builder End of June - almost completed fit out 26th July - MOVE IN DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They weren't even offered when we built nor were they in display homes then, either here or down town... I'd actually like to debate the point that a cornice-free house would add to costs. Cornices no doubt allow the plasterer to be rougher with his initial work, but really, there is no reason for the joins between walls and ceilings to not be butt flush anyway. There is no added cost to the painter because he does a cut-in under the cornice anyway, and think of the savings made by not having to pay for the cornices in the first place! Elizabeth Trip. Fall. Trip. Fall. Trip ... Jump. Jump. Jump. Small kids, older adults, people with wheelchairs. This feature wouldn't get a look in for our family. That's cool. Each to their own. The people that wouldn't ever considering having such a feature are probably of the same thinking as those who would never have a two-storey home - but there are plenty of them around. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Virtual interior raised deck! 8Sep 01, 2010 8:55 pm I quite like the "step up" idea. The one in the pic looks nice. I just wonder after a wine or five, how many "fall downs" there would be . I think it defines the area nicely, probably only need one per home. Someone mentioned to me the other day they were going to go for the no cornice look. My DH went (he's a plaster man). I like the look but there would be no way on Earth I would get my DH to agree. Hence we have cornices. Good luck with the feature wall search. Freakyyyyy....we don't have a feature wall, but we are thinking about painting one. But I hadn't mentioned it yet! Geoff - Decophile. Re: Virtual interior raised deck! 10Sep 01, 2010 9:12 pm I like the look of the raised living area, but I'm pretty sure I'd knock my ankles on the corner of the stairs every time I walked past Re: Virtual interior raised deck! 11Sep 01, 2010 9:51 pm dilla I like the look of the raised living area, but I'm pretty sure I'd knock my ankles on the corner of the stairs every time I walked past I was JUST thinking the same thing! I'm so clumsy I would trip over that corner a million times a day...in saying that though I actually really really like it..... Like really like it. As for the cornices....we aren't having any downstairs - its the square set cornice option my DH chose (do you like how I'm blaming him ) - it's an option in the downstairs of the homes, and has to be taken if we wanted the OH cupboards in kitchen to go the ceiling. The builder then states though that paint colour must them be the same for both walls and ceiling - so our HT room is Dulux Snuggle Pie walls and ceilings... and it does cost more My house and my rants.... - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=26937 We are in!!!...and still unpacking. To a certain extent I agree, but there's a concept called universal access that means you build the basics so that everyone can get around easily. That's been our approach. Whilst our wheelchair using visitors will probably never see our upstairs rooms, at least they will be able to sit in our loungeroom (and use our toilet!). This is a matter I thought long and hard on ... cos personally, I love the look of raised (and dropped floors). We opted for different ceiling heights instead. Not quite the same, but mixes things up a little. e. They weren't even offered when we built nor were they in display homes then, either here or down town... the project builders have finally caught on then looks like as for the raised interior deck, I also like the look but would probably fall over it all the time and get annoyed at the impracticality of it. much prefer different height ceilings to vary up the space dimensions "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Re: Virtual interior raised deck! 15Sep 02, 2010 10:20 am It is interesting that they went to all the trouble of creating the feature and laying a timber floor and steps and YET still used scotia on the steps. You would think that with a display home that is showcasing a newish concept, you would get the all the elements spot on. Re: Virtual interior raised deck! 16Sep 02, 2010 10:23 am is scotia the quad? I know a lot of ppl who have built with PD and the other volume builders couldn't get floors done without quad, so maybe they don't want to show something that can't be done?? Re: Virtual interior raised deck! 17Sep 23, 2010 9:15 am From what I've heard of other home owners and tradies is that plasterers don't like to do square-set but you'll bet they've done it on their own home! I did our living area square-set and it's quite tricky but the difference is amazing. Re: Virtual interior raised deck! 18Oct 14, 2010 12:03 pm Yeah I absolutely love the square set cornices but it is bloody expenisve to do. The builder we eventually went with would not even do it. It looks too busy. I would be looking at the wall instead of the TV! I remember seeing a raised deck in the master bedroom in one of the major builder's display homes. It really looked quite lovely but I wouldn't fancy having my bed on one and trying to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Negotiating the steps whilst half asleep could lead to a few problems sooner or later!
