Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 29, 2010 1:00 am Hey all I thought I would help out a few more bits of info on paint I used to manage an independent paint shop that stocked most major brands, a major paint company, and on some pretty awesome film and TV sets as well so I know a little bit Now every paint company has levels of quality from best to worst Ultra premium Premium Trade premium Trade Budget The difference in the quality comes down to base materials, the more expensive the more high tech and equals better covering, stain resistant, smoother finish, easier to apply Always go for an Ultra premium product it will make you look like a pro, highest stain resistance, best technology I went outside once. Paint 101: BASES 2Aug 29, 2010 1:00 am now we all know paint comes in Base WHITE but there are other bases to achieve darker and vibrant colours White Accent Neutral Coloured(pre-tinted base) However to make it difficult Bristol has White A B C Coloured the further you stray away from a WHITE base the less covering power you have (except for pretinted bases) Bristol A base is pretinted with Raw Amber and help reduce tint use to achieve off white/neutrals but needs tint to help dry properly Neutral base is almost clear and uses HUGE amounts of tint to achieve vibrant colours but it means more coats and sometimes a tinted undercoat to achieve coverage So when you see a Vibrant colour and want it half strength sometimes it just cant be done due to the base (especially neutral considering it is virtually clear) I went outside once. Paint 101:TINTING & COLOUR MATCHING 3Aug 29, 2010 1:27 am Tinting is what gives the paint its colour but some colours can have multiple combinations of tinter colours to achieve certain colours Each paint company will have its own tinter system most use manual system on a rotating platform that require the tinter to look up the correct formula in a book or screen and then make up the mix Solver Dulux Wattyl Taubmans Some paint companies now employ fully automated tinting machines to take the human element out of it Bristol Taubmans Dulux However all the machines are only as good as the upkeep and calibration A daily clean at minimum, 6 mthly calibration to keep the machines in tip top shape Along with automated tinting machines there is also the Spectrophotometer or colour matching machine. Personally I am not a fan of the Colour matcher, it will only work at its best if the sample is flat, clean, solid, and needs to be around 2 cm sq rarely does the sample needing to be matched, tick all the boxes and many paint store staff rely on it, instead of developing the skills to match by eye from scratch or with fandeck (how do you think you get to work on Film and Tv??) Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7157 Thank you.
