Not only have you got the actual canopy to worry about at eye level, you're also going to have a chunk of visual obstruction all the way to the ceiling for the ducting. To give you an example of this taken to the extreme, check out this house that was for auction near us recently. The range hood is ducted all the way to the ceiling with plaster - it's just that the kitchen has a two story void above it! I'd hate to think how powerful a motor you'd need for that... Wow, having that huge square column in the middle kinda kills the grandeur of the open space. Normally though I think they can look quite nice but your range hood will become quite a feature and it'll be very (and I've heard *very very* from a friend doing one) expensive. For any cooking that real messy I have a second cooktop in the laundry. Have a look at the elica range, a little bit on the pricey side however they are a stunner.
