Browse Forums Kitchen Appliances 1 Aug 26, 2010 11:45 pm What are everyone's thoughts on island range hoods? We are thinking of putting our cooktop on the island which would obviously mean putting the range hood out there too. For those who have this arrangement, do you like it? Do you find that you hit your head on the hood? Or that the hood obstructs the openness of an open plan kitchen? Re: Island range hoods 2Aug 27, 2010 8:23 am Personally I am not a huge fan of cooktops on the island. Ideally an overhead canopy should not be much more than 700mm above the cooktop. If your cooktop is at 900 - 950mm, that puts the canopy at around 1650mm....right at eye level for anyone over 165cm. You could look at those extractors that are built into the bench top and pop up. I have no idea how efficient they are, I do know they are pretty expensive and I imagine require a degree of ducting. Otherwise if you want to have your canopy higher than 700mm above the cooktop I am gusessing for it to be effective you are probably going to have to get one with two motors and again you are getting into some serious coin. Re: Island range hoods 3Aug 27, 2010 9:29 am The other thing you've got to think about is how your range hood is then going to be connected to the ceiling - particularly if you've got high ceilings. Not only have you got the actual canopy to worry about at eye level, you're also going to have a chunk of visual obstruction all the way to the ceiling for the ducting. To give you an example of this taken to the extreme, check out this house that was for auction near us recently. The range hood is ducted all the way to the ceiling with plaster - it's just that the kitchen has a two story void above it! I'd hate to think how powerful a motor you'd need for that... Wow, having that huge square column in the middle kinda kills the grandeur of the open space. Normally though I think they can look quite nice but your range hood will become quite a feature and it'll be very (and I've heard *very very* from a friend doing one) expensive. For any cooking that real messy I have a second cooktop in the laundry. Have a look at the elica range, a little bit on the pricey side however they are a stunner.
