Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Aug 14, 2010 4:59 pm Does any one have experience of overpainting a colorbond roof? I live in SE Qld and have a 13 year old white colorbond roof. The paint has gone a bit chalky and easily grows mould so we have decided to get it repainted and our preferred colourscheme has colorbond ironstone for the roof. Can anyone tell me if having a dark roof makes any noticeable difference to temperature within the house? Also for the overpainting does a coat of metal primer and 2 coats of a reputable brand of acrylic roof paint or roof membrane have a good result for up to 10 years? Are there likely to be problems with patchy fading or paint cracking or flaking? Are there any better products than acrylic paint? Sally K Re: Colorbond roof overpainting 2Aug 15, 2010 7:29 am Yes. But before you do, clean the surface. This can be done using a mop or soft bristle brush with non-ionic detergent (such as kitchen detergent) and water. The surface should then be hosed down thoroughly with water and allowed to dry the second rinse removes any detergent residue and is as important as the clean suface Colourbond is just a painted metal surface no need for primer Painting over the colourbond expect to do more than 2 coats as you will be going over white and ironstone is fairly dark possibly 4 coats or more Acrylic is best as it will expand and contract with the colourbond 10 years possible yeah possibly Just use a high performance exterior paint - Dulux weathershield, Taubmans Endure, Wattyl Solagard If the steel is being used to catch drinking water, also check with the manufacturer that the paint is suitable for this purpose. It's important to note that overpainting COLORBOND® steel will void any warranties issued by BlueScope I went outside once. The graphics were alright, but the gameplay sucked! Michael sounds like a true professional to me. Before I became a floor coating applicator I used to remove graffiti from buildings in the 1980's and I found colorbond to be the best paint system hands down because I frequently removed graffiti from it using paint strippers without damaging (much) the colorbond underneath. My guess is that it is worth painting again the correct way. Re: Colorbond roof overpainting 6Dec 18, 2013 9:29 am The previous posts in this thread seem to be out of date. Water based acrylic is recommended by Bluescope. http://steelproducts.bluescopesteel.com.au/files/dmfile/TB2NextGenSept2013.pdf Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10363 You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 19498 Hi all, Our boundary perimeter fences need replacing (3 sides).
