Whipper Snippers!

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has any good tips for winding the lines on a whipper snipper? I have a Stihl line trimmer that is meant to have bump feed. However it never seems to work. Whenever the line becomes too frayed/short I end up having to loosen/unscrew the top and pull more line out by hand. TIA.

I've got a Weedeater Whipper Snipper which has two sets of cord and a bump feed....I was skeptical when I bought it as I thought I may have problems with the double cord. After 7 years of use I managed to stay out of trouble by following two rules:

1. I never put more than half the capacity of cord on to the reel because I found the cord was melting together - why...dunno.

2. Followed the manufacturer's instructions for the cord diameter and bought good quality cord - if I bought cheaper cord or wrong diameter it would jam.

Don't really have to follow any special procedure to wind the cord on...although an extra hand and six digits would be helpful...

TDL, thanx for your response - I definitely have the right diameter cord but not sure of the quality so I will check that out.

I remember reading somewhere long ago about soaking the cord in something but not sure what. My memory ain't what it used to be

Someone gave me a tip of spraying a bit of WD40 on it to stop the cord welding...great idea....but it was so slippery I needed another two hands onto op of the three you need to spool a whipper snipper.

I do the WD40 trick - but I load it first, then fit it, and spray the WD into the head using the nozzle.

When you need to reload, it takes a good wipe down with a rag before you can grip it though!

When I bought my whipper snipper I refused to get reload for exactly this reason.
My girlfriend has one and has the same problem as you enigma_brennan.

I bought a Husqvarna…… haven’t had any probs with it at all and its 10 years old.

I too have a Weedeater with the twin spool - I have had it for 7 years and have never had a problem winding on new line or using the bump-feed. I've never even removed the spark plug either, it still starts 2nd or 3rd pull

Hi Michelle. Where did you buy your Husqvarna? Looking for a dealer. Weadeaters was 'the' brand for me in the US:)

Hi Greg……I bought mine in Nowra at our local Marine Centre, who must be a Husqvarna retailer.

It wasn’t cheap, in comparison to other Whipper Snipers it was quite expensive, but that’s why I haven’t had any problems with it!!

Not sure where you would get one, I’ve just had a quick look on Google, no luck.

good cord is amust, soak it in water ie all the time makes it less brittle, and the trick is to bump feed often so the length of cord hanging out has enough weight in it to pull more cord out when you bump and release the clamp on the line.

Trip was superb

Paula - in the end there wasnt as much room in my 5 bags as Í thought there would be :shock:

But I reckon the paddle would have enjoyed your company on the flights :wink:
