Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 07, 2010 9:55 am We have been delighted to find a wall oven on special that meets all our specs - one of three that Choice mag recommended in its last review of ovens. It's a discontinued model and this is ex-display; it is less than half the price of what it once would have been. All its bits are in good order and the front panels are all perfect, but there is a fine coating of rust on one of the exterior sides, about 2cm wide by 10cm long. I am assuming a bit of sea water crept in during shipping. It's at least a year old, so I would expect that if it were going to rust anywhere else, it would be showing signs of doing so by now. Does anyone out there have any views or experience about whether rust on the side is likely to be problematic? Is there a way to seal the rust off to stop the oxidising process? Would that involve all manner of nasty chemicals that shouldn't be heated up? I have tried googling for answers, but haven't been able to find a search term that comes close to finding me the info I need, even after setting it to exclude camp ovens, dutch ovens, cast iron and various other things ... Hope someone knowledgeable is out there tonight. Thanks in anticipation. e. (Lots of people have read this post but no answers. ) There's a sort of a supporting frame that sits behind the oven door, and the side of that is what has rusted. So it's just plain everyday steel. It's not visible at all when the oven is in place. I rang Blanco and the woman there was nice but had no real clue. She couldn't really see any cause for concern ... did chuckle when I suggested that by the time it rusted through, the rest of the oven would probably have clapped out anyway. Any thoughts welcome. e. Re: Rust on the outside of an oven 4Aug 09, 2010 5:35 pm Elizabeth Have you tried to remove the door by pulling it out, not too hard but that will expose the hinges perhaps that would make the rust more visible. Is this oven under warranty? Most ovens do have up to four years. Re: Rust on the outside of an oven 5Aug 09, 2010 6:12 pm Elizabeth Hi Ed Hooray, somebody who might have an idea!! The way I look at it, we're spending half the money that we were planning to, and the rusty bit is almost certainly going to survive the other parts (given today's manufacturing standards). Phew. I will cross oven off my shopping list. e. You’re on the right track, wire brush in a grinder then a zinc rich epoxy primer then a top coat of some sort, like a waterproofing membrane.
