I've decided that we are going to have to get a rotary hoe out to all of our beds in the next couple of weeks.....the soil is incredible (teeming with worms) but becasue it's been pasture for so long the grass on it is very strong to just try and use the spade. Trying to decide whether we can afford to buy one rather than hire at $100/day....... Re: My vegie garden plan 47Jul 12, 2010 3:45 pm There will be plenty of photo's don't worry!! BeatrixKiddo I can get a trailer from my family - but I'm just not sure how much I can be bothered going from Bulleen to Mernda with a trailer load of soil... how much does a trailer hold?? Looking forward to seeing your vegie patch - you almost inspired me to get to mine (the beds are already there from when we bought the place, but I've no idea what to plant right now). Re: My vegie garden plan 49Jul 12, 2010 4:56 pm $70 bucks delivery, jeez thats steep as. Maybe I should be doing runs with my ute on the weekends. I would be going local before spending that much on delivery. Plus they are not really busy during the week so might do it cheaper. Some people don't have time to do the job right the first time, but seem to have plenty of time to fix their mistakes. Build Thread Re: My vegie garden plan 50Jul 12, 2010 5:49 pm Normal smallish trailer holds about a 1m2. Maybe you could justify the trip by picking up some bare rooted berries and fruit that is in stock Great range atm but i couldn't find any blueberries on the weekend.. Re: My vegie garden plan 51Jul 12, 2010 10:05 pm My Dad made a good point tonight - how much can I move in a day? So I mawy as well go get a trailer load and save the money and do what I can do a day.... I'm leaning towards going to collect it now 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' First of all, you need to imagine a pile of pellets! Wood from the pellets that I pulled apart! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The wood has been re-constructed into vegie beds!! I may cut down the middle pole, but not sure yet as the poles will be really useful for things like shade cloth and lines for growing plants such as beans and tomatoes etc to grow along It's actually taken a lot more work than expected pulling apart the pellts and re-assembling them, but I really do like what I've achieved! They are certainly unique!! I am in the middle of constructing some new beds atm and i read clever tip on a website where they cut small pieces of pvc pipe (to the height of the timber edge) and attached them inside of each side with a bracket. They then used another long thin bit of pvc pipe inserted in one side of the cutoff pipe and bent over into the other pipe insert to form a arch. Bird netting/plastic/shade cloth etc can then be easily drapped over the bed when needed and then easily hidden away the rest of the year.
Re: My vegie garden plan 57Jul 13, 2010 1:11 pm That's exactly the first thing I thought of Beatrix! As it is Lisa those posts have given to a very handy spot for draping bird netting or attaching trellis/wire to for climbing peas & beans. After a 20 minute hunt I couldn't find it so I called my brother - he said he'd bring one around in 30 minutes. In typical fashion I then found it! With my spirit level in hand I then went about measuring where to put them and the spaces for pathways etc and then I dug up the soil to level the ground... I would have taken photo's of it today BUT then Erin came around and we took her puppy dogs for a walk. Oh and I ran out of nails part way through today - I needed 5 extra nails so I had to go aaallllll the way to Bunnings just to get 5 nails, but of course I couldn't just get 5 nails, no - I had to get another 140!! I'm kinda sore and feeling old right now and I still have to fill them with soil - hopefully tomorrow or next weekend! 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.'
