Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry 1 Jun 19, 2010 3:04 pm Hello, We are doing a bathroom reno, ripping everything out basically and putting new everything in but generally in the same place so minimal plumbing expenses would be needed hopefully. Just wondering what order to do everything in. We need to do Floor and wall tiles Vanity New toilet New shower new bath So would we rip out everything including tiles and then get tiles done first then everything after? Or do we get a plumber first to make sure everything is ok there in case he has to go in and do stuff which would ruin a tilers work if the tiling was done first? We would like to do everything as quickly as possible too as we will be living there with 2 toddlers whilst having this all done. Was also wondering if we have old style taps and spouts (ie; no mixers) is it a big plumbing job to change to mixers? We are in a double brick house so I presume it would not be as easy as a brick veneer house to make changes to the plumbing? If anyone has an guidance on that I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Re: What order for bathroom renovation? 2Jun 19, 2010 8:09 pm Hi, I'll be interested in replies to this, as I'm just finishing the ensuite, which is upstairs in brick veneer, and now thinking about the downstairs bathroom, which is double brick on a slab. I reckon the key to it all is detailed planning. Know the dimensions of the new bath and toilet first, not later, and the thickness of the tiles: - strip out all old fittings and tiles (although you can tile over old tiles if they are sound, it just raises the floor a bit, and causes fiddling with the floor waste) then see what you have got - install any new plumbing (this might need a few bricks removed and replaced if pipes are in the wall cavity) and make sure there are no leaks - you can go to mixer taps, it is just that the plumber will need to do a bit of demolition on the walls here and there, and they will need some rendering after. The shower taps have to come out, and the connections be redone for the mixer valve, - redo electricals as needed - do any waterproofing membrane needed in the shower and elsewhere. This varies according to the type of shower base. - install the bath. Installation varies according to the bath type. - tile, grout, then install vanity, toilet and shower screen Cheers Re: What order for bathroom renovation? 3Jun 21, 2010 8:05 pm Thanks very much for your response Geoff. It seems that the advances in technology have rendered my bathroom fixtures and fittings so outdated that a simple renovation is probably not on the cards here!
