Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 14, 2010 12:27 pm We are on septic which flows into a 'wisconsin mound', basically a 20m long mound (I think its about 1 1/2 - 2m high). It is too steep to mow so we've been advised to mulch it. I'd love to grow some kind of ground cover instead, but it would need shallow roots (so it didn't damage the septic) and I would imagine there would be nutrient issues with the soil. Any ideas or just stick with mulch? Re: Covering a septic mound 2Jun 15, 2010 2:20 pm Mulch it heavily with straw and then green mulch to smother the grass already growing on it and to build it up. (Leave the grass as a green manure crop). Use a few sheets of wet newspaper to assist with the smothering if neccesary, but dont overdo it as you want oxygen to be able to penetrate and the composting from the straw and mulch to be able to percolate through the soil below. Then plant ground covers into it in a few weeks time. If they don't thrive then it is mulched anyway. Where are you located ? Re: Covering a septic mound 4Jun 17, 2010 2:47 pm Depends on what style of plants you like. Ficinia nodosa would be good, especially if the mound is a bit damp. Any prostrate Aussie natives of Callistoemon, Eremophilia or Grevillea etc genus are great but it may be too wet for some. Fu might jump in and give you a real answer......... Re: Covering a septic mound 6Jun 18, 2010 12:23 pm We've got one of these mounds in our yard, too. At the moment it's covered in mulch from the trees that were lopped down to make way for it. I plan to grow Grevillea "Gin Gin Gem" on it. Re: Covering a septic mound 7Jun 18, 2010 12:49 pm @ Fu! Low natives would definitely be my choice. Grevillea & bottle brush grow like weeds around here so they would be a great option as long as their roots won't damage the septic. I guess I'll grab a few & put them amongst the mulch & see what they do! Re: Covering a septic mound 8Jun 19, 2010 9:21 pm Have ago at growing Boronia on it. They love rich soil and water. If it fails, well at least it smelt fantastic for bit got it. thanks. I was looking for word ' Adobe' and added filter. all good. 12 14511 |
