Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 24, 2010 9:20 pm We need sound insulation around our home theatre room walls. Should be go for acoustic batts, which are cheap or the more expensive sound plaster board? Apart from cost, what the advantages/disadvantages? Any advice/opinions welcome Re: Acoustic bats -vs- sound check plaster board??? 2May 24, 2010 9:23 pm We used rockwall batts to block noice from next doors pool filter & voices from thier deck so far it has worked well. No sure how it would go on the base sounds. Cheers Lou http://take2-customdesigndownslope.blogspot.com 07-10-09 omg they have cut the block 14-05-10 we finally have the keys Re: Acoustic bats -vs- sound check plaster board??? 4May 24, 2010 10:47 pm Hi Rowena, There are other area's in the forum that have a lot of info on this topic. In brief, the batts provide some sound deadening for higher frequencies, from human voice and above but the bass tones like rumbling and even explosions don't get dampened because the batts have no mass to them. Most people have the batts for their Home theatres but still note that it can be heard from an adjoining room. The plasterboard is slightly better as they have some mass so it keeps some of the lower bassy tones down. 13mm is better than 10mm. Ideally, depending on your budget, you would do both - very hard to justify, I know. Also make sure you have a very solid door because that's where most of your leakage will come from. There are people on H1 with a lot of knowledge. I've even specified soundproofing in my design by using a staggered stud set up for the walls. A High density batt so that it also has mass and a twin layer of 13mm plaster with a soundproofing layer sandwiched between them. So you see it all depends on how much you feel you want it to be "soundproof" or just sound deadened a bit. SK. The plasterboard is mass. Many different ways to get a wall heavy. Standard plasterboard is heavy also. Insulation is providing some absorption in the cavity. The other 2 elements would decoupling and damping. Ted White Re: Acoustic bats -vs- sound check plaster board??? 6May 25, 2010 10:34 am Depends on how much you want to spend and what level of sound dampening you wish to achieve? Try using Fyrchek plasterboard (double layer) as I think it is cheaper than sound check but performs well acoustically. I would also use soundscreen insulation in the cavity wall. If you want to take it to another level, you can use rubber grommets (isolation clips) to attach the plasterboard to minimise the transfer of vibration (sound) and you could also use a barium loaded vinyl draped over and batten screwed or glued to the wall frame and then plasterboard over that. Its really up to how much you want to spend! Re: Acoustic bats -vs- sound check plaster board??? 7May 25, 2010 10:41 am Can you have both? Our HT/games room uses both and even though there is no door - we put my crying nephew in there when he's fussy and you barely hear a thing After 4 years - we're in! Re: Acoustic bats -vs- sound check plaster board??? 8May 25, 2010 11:01 am Yes you can have both and ideally you would have all 4 elements. In reality you would have an award winning wall if you: Decoupled the wall via staggered studs Added Absorption with standard insulation. Nothing special Added Mass from double standard plasterboard Cheap, easy and very effective Ted White Re: Acoustic bats -vs- sound check plaster board??? 9May 27, 2010 7:15 pm Thanks so much for the information. Sounds like the best option would be to have a combination of the batts and board. We will lose sound from the cavity sliding door (changed from regular due to the set up of the room) and the two windows at the front of the house. I'll feed these options to the builder and see what price he can come up with. Many thanks for your technical advice. Much appreciated.
