Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 May 18, 2010 10:43 pm Hello All, I'm currently in the process of choosing my floor tiles which will be used throughout the majority of the home (excluding Living Room & Bedrooms) and was interested in knowing others thoughts on the following: 1. Apart from the material cost difference, what are the pro's and con's of using ceramic vs porcelain tiles ? 2. For those who have used floor tiles within your home, (i) which material did you choose (ceramic or porcelain), (ii) what where the size of the tiles chosen (300x300, 450x450 or 600x600) & (iii) why did you choose that particular material & size ? I also like the very small grout gaps with porcelain, however, not only is the product more expensive in the first instance, but preparing the surface is also costly and can present problems. See my thread for more on this: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=33919 We are just about to lay 600x600 matt porcelain tiles and I still can't reconcile the differing floor levels between tile and what will be carpeted. Ceramic tiles seem much, much easier to deal with. However, it's about a certain aesthetic. Which do you prefer the look of? Pix Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Re: Floor Tiles - Ceramic vs Porcelain ?? 5May 22, 2010 4:16 pm Thanks for both your comments... Pix , I noticed that you decided on 600x600 tiles. Out of interest, did you have to pay more to get them laid as opposed to say 450x450? I ask as I've been quoted an additional $29/m2 to get the bigger tile laid!!!! They were about $60/sqm on special. Laying cost a bit more than I expected, around $45/sqm. This included screeding because the floor was uneven. Also the space has lots of angles so there was a lot of cutting. We removed the old tiles our selves (this was a reno, not new build), that was VERY messy.. still cleaning up the dust. We went for 450 because I didnt like the look of 300, and the tiler would have charged more for 600 tiles. We are very happy with the tiles, and the tiler did a very good job laying them. Very small grout lines (3mm) and the tiles have a rectified edge. However doing it again I might go wood. The reason we chose tile was price, and time to lay, but the tiles took 2 weeks, and the wood about 3 or 4 weeks. I also find that after mopping I have streaks all over them (have worked out how not to do this, but it took a while). I believe the upkeep of ceramic is way easier than porcelain. In saying all this, I am not a 'tile' fan. Confused Renovator Re: Floor Tiles - Ceramic vs Porcelain ?? 8May 28, 2010 11:39 pm I'm mostly worried about any potential poor workmanship that I think would show more on porc tiles. Though, I went to a display home yesterday and was absolutely amazed with how the porcelain tiling was done, and in such huge rooms. It was absolutely spotless, I still cannot believe it's actually doable. My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Floor Tiles - Ceramic vs Porcelain ?? 10May 30, 2010 11:25 am Chorlton, I don't actually know if we paid more to get the 600mmx600mm laid as I was quoted a price for the job. As we didn't consider a smaller size I have no point of comparison. Sorry. Pix Built a (highly) modified Allcastle Maxworth 38.7 in Sydney. Re: Floor Tiles - Ceramic vs Porcelain ?? 11May 30, 2010 1:26 pm We chose full bodied vitrified porcelain 600mmx600mm tiles. I love the look of them and my personal opinion is that they look a lot more chic than ceramic. I love how, when laid very closely together, they look like a continuous floor rather than tiles separated by grout. That's the look we want to achieve in our place. They are a little more costly to lay, but worth it IMO. I had ceramic tiles in our old house and HATED them... the grout looked filthy all the time, and they were easily chipped. We have 450mmx450mm white glazed porcelain tiles in this rental that we're in (while waiting for our build) and I also hate them as they are curved edge and you can see the grout. It's personal choice really. Re: Floor Tiles - Ceramic vs Porcelain ?? 12Dec 13, 2018 12:59 pm Here is the distinction among ceramic and porcelain tiles: 1) Porcelain tiles have a water ingestion rate of 0.5% 2) Ceramic is generally not sturdy enough for outside use since it ingests excessively water 3) Porcelain muds are denser and subsequently less permeable than earthenware mud 4) Porcelain tiles are solid progressively and more qualified for overwhelming use than artistic tile. 5) Ceramic a gentler to cut than porcelain 6) Ceramic tiles are less expensive than porcelain tile 7) PEI Rating: Porcelain is rated higher compare to ceramic.
