I was just wondering if anyone else had done this?
Wish I had thought of it....

Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 19, 2010 7:54 pm My Aunty is having a new kitchen installed. She was telling me that she will be having slide out drawers built into the kickboards of the cupboards. I though that was a brilliant idea. Great for items like baking trays, pot lids etc . They are great to store papers as we have one for all our oven instruction books etc, another for all the bits you accumulate such as address books, plastic bags etc and bills. However they are not as deep as I expected and they tend to spring open when you accidentally kick them. I also worry that over time the gaps will become more obvious and the kickboards will not look as attractive. However, when you are as challenged for storage space as we are, they are one way to sqeeze just a bit more into your house. Re: Kickboard drawers 3May 19, 2010 9:33 pm Oh that's interesting NF, I didn't think of the issues that you have mentioned. She has a small space and really needs them. Good points you have made there. Thanks. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Kickboard drawers 4May 19, 2010 9:39 pm I know someone who did a whole new home reno and they got these done. they were disappointed as you could already see gaps between the drawers and the floors I guess or cabinets. They were not happy but at the time thought it was great idea. Re: Kickboard drawers 5May 19, 2010 10:04 pm i thought they were a great idea too, especially in my small house....until i heard the price tag ![]() Re: Kickboard drawers 7May 20, 2010 9:42 am We tried to get them installed, however our cabinet maker didn't like them (and was very good at convincing us of things to make his life easier) because they are difficult to get right on an uneven floor. We're not getting them now, but seeing the above comments I think I don't mind too much now. However what i have drawn on the left is an innovative alternative that is much more appropriate and better uses the space Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ To give you an idea of usage, the next image shows its plausibility. That is a better idea losonogo! thanks for all that trouble! Great drawing. Yes I can see that would be a much better option. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Kickboard drawers 13May 24, 2010 9:31 am The only issue I have with a system like this is that you still need a gap underneath the bottom draw. I like full extension runners so you can access things at the rear of the draws and inevetibly the draw will have some drop at the front when at full extension. To prevent the draw front hitting the ground you would want to leave at least a 5mm gap under the bottom of draw. I dont like gaps in the kitchen, particularlly where crumbs and spills may get into and be hard to clean. Who wants to empty a draw and remove it just to extract a spill. As mentioned, if you are tight for space it may be an option, but....... I have seen something similar done in stairs ..... I guess you'd need a staircase though for that to work LOL Building the Canterbury 27E by NBG: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=34051 Re: Kickboard drawers 15May 24, 2010 10:08 am A friend of a friend had something similar to the large pot drawers done - they were fantastic storage. Two things that she had a problem with 1) she kicked it! Because it was the same as the rest of the drawers, her feet used to touch them and meant that she couldn't get close tothe bench, and she actually damaged them and consequently over time they had issues opening and 2) as was noted above - scraps did get underneath and it lead to a real ant problem.... Anyhoo - there are always pros and cons but personally I went for kickboards... My house and my rants.... - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=26937 We are in!!!...and still unpacking. We don't have a huge amount of space so they are great for all my baking trays and cake tins. Mind you I don't bake much so I don't have to open them very often LOL. I am getting my kitchen bench extended and will add another kickboard drawer under the new set of drawers. Haven't had any problems with them. hth Re: Kickboard drawers 17May 29, 2010 12:55 pm Thanks for that donnam. That's great to know. Welcome to HomeOne by the way. I hope you'll post pics of your kitchen bench extension. ![]() www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Kickboard drawers 20May 29, 2010 5:28 pm The drawers are actually 10-15mm from the ground. It is also possible to flush mount some little wheels on the underside of the drawer base to add extra sliding ability. This will also help to keep the drawers front off the ground. It also should be mentioned that good drawer runners are a must regardless, especially, if you intend to you them for heavy items.
