Re: What to do with leftover bricks from build 8Apr 28, 2010 4:21 pm BBQ for sure, thats what I'd be doing. Later down ther track there is always a desire to find the original brick for some little project so keep them away for a rainy day. Re: What to do with leftover bricks from build 10Apr 28, 2010 4:40 pm Nathan SteelFab Someone mentioned in another thread that the owner actually does not own them, the builder does? Strange huh, just don't mention that he bought them with your money. I'd make a letterbox or like someone mentioned a bbq bench. It's true, the builder owns them, like EcoClassic owns the offcuts from manufactured windows and SteelFab owns the offcuts and waste from steel. The builder bought the bricks with his money, he built a house, when you have paid everything you get to own the house, and he keeps the spare materials which came to site. But it often costs more than the spare materials are worth to pick them up and store them. If you ask the supervisor he will often let you have it anyway... Ed Does that mean that the builder does not charge for the cost of those bricks and tiles which end up being dumped? Our builder dumped a full pallet of roof tiles and close to three pallets of bricks (but we did save two brick pallets after we realised what was happening). Are they going to take the cost of those dumped materials out of their profit or did I end up paying for them? I don't think that the ownership matter is quite as black and white as you portray. Surely if I pay for them, they are mine! Re: What to do with leftover bricks from build 15Apr 29, 2010 10:21 am I've seen paths edged with the same bricks that we used for the house. Not sure if I'd do it. Some councils require sheds larger than a certain size to match the house. We are using the ones we saved to enclose the al fresco. At least, the ones we saved and the local kids didn't damage by playing with. They do crack so easily. Surely if I pay for them, they are mine! When you buy a house from a project builder, you are not being charged for materials, you are being charged for a finished house. So whatever it takes to build the house is his problem, any left overs are his benefit, and any shortfall is his liability. You never paid for materials... you paid for the house. You also don't have to worry about the rubbish removal, that's his problem too... as is theft and damage. Surely if I pay for them, they are mine! Like Ed said, they purchase the raw materials, therefore they own them; you are paying for the finished product (the completed house). That said, the left-overs are often useless to the builders so they dispose of them. If you negotiate with your builder to retain them post-handover, it saves the builder the cost of disposing of them, so it's win/win. Re: What to do with leftover bricks from build 20May 11, 2010 11:53 pm The leftover bricks can be used creatively. If you need to lay a patio, the bricks look great used in a pattern in a concrete slab. The bricks will help tie the patio to the house. The outdoor fire idea sounds cool too That's a fantastic result! Happy you got it sorted out. cheers Simeon 6 8732 Thank you so much everyone. This all makes a lot of sense. I guess when you talk to a builder who butters up everything to look very polished, you get to start believing… 7 18614 |
