Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 02, 2008 11:01 am We're trying to work out what to do with undermount sinks in the design of our small kitchen. I posted another thread earlier here ("Corner Sink Options") which included a crude diagram of our design. We're not happy with the corner sink options available, so we're looking at other alternatives.
1. With undermount sinks, what is the minimum safe clearance you can have been the cut-out and the front edge, back edge, and other cut-outs? 2. Is it odd to mount a sink diagonally in a corner? Thanks for any advice! This is our first new kitchen, and the decisions are killing us! Re: Undermount sinks in Caesarstone - how much clearance??? 2Mar 03, 2008 7:58 pm Alabaster,
Before you put a sink in the corner, check that you are not too close to the joint(s) or joint clamps in the benchtop. I don't have any experience with undermount sinks. Is the edge of the benchtop exposed to water. If it is, I'll recommend that you stay away. Edging, which is ironed on, can be susceptible to water damage. Chris Re: Undermount sinks in Caesarstone - how much clearance??? 3Mar 03, 2008 8:07 pm Hi Chris,
Thanks for your reply! We're talking about a Caesarstone/manufactured stone benchtop, and I'm guessing you're talking about laminate benches, is that right? My concern with the manufactured stone is finding out how much "edge" of stone you have to leave around a cutout so it won't break during normal use. We're finding a sink configuration quite difficult due to the small size of the kitchen. Tossing up whether to just go with a single bowl (which I feel may be too restrictive, although we don't use the 1/4 bowl we have at the moment) or a 1 + 1/4. With the 1 + 1/4, can't decide between a single undermount sink incorporating the two (which means no stone between the two bowls) or two separate sinks (which means two cutouts, stone between them, looks nicer, but possibly more prone to breakage) Having only used very old, laminate kitchens thus far in my life, quite a change! Any other advice welcomed!!! Re: Undermount sinks in Caesarstone - how much clearance??? 4Mar 03, 2008 8:25 pm Personally I'll stay away from having two separate bowls due to the reason you've already outlined, and also I suspect that area would be subject to lot of accidental bumps when moving large pots between sinks thus chipping or damaging your dishes. I would assume it'll also cost more to install due to requiring two separate cutouts. Re: Undermount sinks in Caesarstone - how much clearance??? 5Mar 05, 2008 10:43 pm Thanks DNA! We've decided to go with a combined 1 + 1/2 unit for those reasons. I've asked the kitchen guy if it will be cheaper; he's been a bit cranky as we've dragged out the purchase of appliances and sink, no doubt he'll have some reason why we've done the wrong thing
I have to keep reminding myself I'm the customer! Re: Undermount sinks in Caesarstone - how much clearance??? 6Mar 06, 2008 2:04 pm So with sinks in stone benches, I presume that you can either have sinks under the bench cutout, or sinks with a lip that fit into a cutout?
