Brake in through the Roof!

Last weekend my friend, thank god not me, got broken into through the roof!
They climbed down through the manhole and stole jewellry etc.
Is there any suggestions to prevent this happening?
I am thinking about getting sarking on my roof, would they have to tear it to get through? Or do you think they wouldn't bother?

Install an alarm and have a sensor in the roof.
Sarking only protects water and not people.

I still have to think about alarms, not sure about their cost.

Does your friend's house have an alarm system ? if not, why bother with going through the roof when door / windows would be an easier alternative.

Was it a single or double storey house? Pretty impressive if the crooks scaled a double storey and broke in!

Easy way - get colorbond and they rivett it down - you can't lift up a piece unless you have something to remove the rivett!

I know I am going to get slammed for poor taste, but why don't you get one of the guys that were installing roof insulation up until a couple of weeks ago.

Then you would have a live electrical barrier to protect you.

Seriously though, as suggested earlier you can look for roof sensors to hang off your alarm system. Otherwise you can put a latch lock on the inside (house side) of the man hole cover. One on either side of the cover should do the trick.

just run some razor wire in the roof.. im sure they'll enjoy having their legs cut when they try and rob you. or .. hook up a cow prod or something so that when you set the alarm the man hole becomes electrically charged... ZAP!

This reminded me of just after my parents split up many years ago - we found out my dad had been breaking into the house thru the roof & either stealing stuff or moving the furniture around just to be a pain.

We only found out because we started leaving the dog in the house when we went out, he broke in one day & the dog bit him (dog arrived after the split so dog didnt know him) & my idiot father reported the dogbite to the Police becuase he figured we would have to have her put down - idiot.

Sorry no help to the op but had to share anyway.

You could add a hasp and padlock from inside the house, other option is putting on 4 sliding bolts, one on each side so it needs to be unlocked (via the padlock or bolt) from underneath before it can be removed for access.
