I just made an offer on this house (offer was accepted). We would really like to put up two walls to replace the banisters as they look so out of place. I was looking to find out what this would cost us.
This is the lounge with the horrid banister. We want to put up a wall that gives the passage some privacy. We were hoping to put some modern rectangular openings in the wall as well so that the hall doesn't become a clusterphobic shaft. Hope that makes sense!
This is the kitchen area leading up to the lounge. I was wanting to get rid of
the banister and put up a wall there too.
Do you guys have any advice or suggestions? Any idea about how much this would cost us?

Are you thinking of doing it yourselve's?, if so, you could use 75mm light gauge steel track and studs and gyprock sheeting, pretty simple, you can make openings and any reveals as required

I wish we were handy people around the house, but it's not the case. Most times we end up making things worse when we do it ourselves. But thanks for the info and the heads up so we know what this job will take. We are most likely looking for someone professional to do this for us. We are in the Bendigo area. Any idea about the cost involved? Thanks again!

Finished job depending on the amount of reveal openings--rough guess around $350 per linear metre.
ps--take a rough plan to a CSR/Boral outlet
, they will give you a quote-or put you in touch with a subbie
pps--while your at it, maybe square off those arches--they should already have the head in place--just a matter of cutting out the plaster and making square openings to match your planned openings in the new wall

Your advice has been superb! The squaring off idea of the archway is brilliant. It really would update the house brilliantly along with putting up the walls. Thanks Again!
