Don't now what happened but I could not believe what I saw esp when it was 5.30 in the afternoon. But Ferals have not self respect for themselves let alone anybody or anything else so these things will keep on happening. That's why those *%$# keep stealing, they know that this is not a crime important enough for those busy police officers... A shame because one day those thieves will get bashed because people are getting tired of that, and the guy bashing them will be in the wrong and probably get sued by those same &$%*... Solidarity between neighbours (Sometimes people see something but don't say anything), night vision video cam that turns on when something is moving would be enough evidence to bring those $#%& on a golden plate to the police... Good luck! Re: Thieves stealing my bushes advice needed. 9Mar 21, 2010 8:23 pm hmm lots of nice umm chilli powder on the leaves perhaps or something equally irritating. capsicum spray:) I mean you can use it to deter cats supposedly so why not to deter thieves. after the first few cause a rash or singing bits they might think again before repeating the process. Re: Thieves stealing my bushes advice needed. 10Mar 21, 2010 9:01 pm Thanks everyone, but for 9 plants, I really cant afford a $500 cctv camera, I would prefer to build a fence. My neighbours are aware, but I am only sleeping 5 meters away, if I didnt hear anything they wont. How would capsicum spray or chilli powder work? Would they breathe it in? Re: Thieves stealing my bushes advice needed. 11Mar 21, 2010 9:07 pm Quote: How would capsicum spray or chilli powder work? Would they breathe it in? Most likely it would work by the little bastards coming back and throwing a rock through your window. Most of the petty criminals that ive had to deal with over the years are just that: petty. I would probably go with a sensor light and a neigborhood letterbox drop warning others about this activity. Re: Thieves stealing my bushes advice needed. 12Mar 21, 2010 9:09 pm I disagree that the theft of plants is not too important to report to police. Local police will always want this kind of anti-social theft reported. No crime is too trivial to be reported as it may just be part of a larger problem. Plus, it's not up to people to prioritise police jobs. Just report it and they will prioritise as necessary. Sensor lights act as great deterrents. No thief likes light if there's a chance they will get caught! Best of luck. Re: Thieves stealing my bushes advice needed. 13Mar 21, 2010 9:16 pm Write in your local newspapers "letter to the editor" section on what has been happening, just in case there are others out there. It's a way of getting your local community involved. I thought the security video camera idea was excellent. it doesn't have to be a real one, just a dummy one and perhaps you could also buy one of those "house under surveillance" signs aswell. Good luck, very frustrating and I sympathise with you. Re: Thieves stealing my bushes advice needed. 14Mar 21, 2010 9:28 pm Yes report it to the police but they won't really do anything... I have had, my Agave in a pot stolen from my front porch, a Buddha statue in my front yard stolen, my gardening pitch fork stolen (mid afternoon), my car has been keyed and spray painted, my husbands car has been written on with fluro paint texta and broken into with all of the loose change in his ash tray stolen, our front fence (that we built to keep the ferals out) was tagged and someone ripped the decking slats off a section of fence.... and the police have done nothing!!! AND WE LIVE ON A BUSY ROAD that is in full view of umpteen cars driving past at any hour of the day! Where I work (on the same road that I live on) we got the landscaping done... for the past 18 months our giant birds of paradise have been stolen nearly every fortnight!!! I thought of writing into the paper... but I really don't think these types of people would actually READ the paper... they're too busy out there ruining what everyone else is working so hard for! (Sorry if that sounded like a rant... but I feel your pain... 5 years of vandalism and theft is very heart breaking... hence our decision to move!) You can gets some stunning looking hedging plants but you have watch out for the spikes. I planted some as a hedge along a fence of our house we built in 1997 but I can't remember what they were called. They were variegated, had little purple flowers, grew to about 2m and looked fantastic. Easy to edge but bit you if you put your hand in them. Just can't seem to remember what they were called. If you wanted that type of plant that would be a good question to ask Fu PCI Done Re: Thieves stealing my bushes advice needed. 16Mar 21, 2010 9:39 pm buildingwithhamra Thanks everyone, but for 9 plants, I really cant afford a $500 cctv camera, I would prefer to build a fence. buildingwithhamra, did you click on the link? It's only $39.95. If all your neighbours are aware, somebody just might happen to be up in the middle of the night when thieves are sneaking around, and may see something. I have three neighbours who work nights and come home at odd hours, and my son regularly gets home between midnight and 5:00am. Plus my husband is an insomniac and can be wandering around the house at any time. Chances are, there's always somebody up in our street. So you never know who's looking out their window. Make sure they all know what's been happening - it can't hurt. It's only $39.95 Thanks kek I did, but I dont think a fake camera would work, cause people know real ones cost a lot and who is seriously going to pay $$$ for a few plants. And its dark, I dont think the image would be good enough to catch them, I think they park down the street a little ...(I tracked dirt to middle of the road which suddenly stopped) so I dont even think a camera would pick up a number plate. Thanks Jose27 about your idea, but I still have 10 of these plants left, so unless they all get stolen I need to keep the same plant. I have reported to the police and I asked whether it was a waste of time, she said it helps with their crime statitics, I said great, that helps you, but how does it help me, she said if someone rings and says 5 plants have been thrown over their fence I may get them back, unlikely but you never know. Sleven, I would of resorted to razor blades or fish hooks for the bird of paradise, I would be nice and put up a little sign, hopefully that would waiver my legal responsibility if someone got harmed. Thanks everyone I am going to go for a sensor light, and then a fence maybe just temporary, my landscaper says the roots should be good in about 3 months. I have been told people steal these and sell them at markets, I went to the local sunday garden market and didnt find them, but did find rosemary for $3 which my landscaper says costs about $10.
