Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Mar 15, 2010 7:29 pm Hi everyone, I've recently planted a few cordylines and yuccas in my front garden. Has anyone else on here got cordylines and yuccas in their garden!? If so - please post pics I'm curious to see how you have used them (layout, patterns - etc, and what other plants did you use with them?) Heres a pic of the ones I planted a few days ago. I want to add some other plants - just not sure what yet! Thats why I havent put down any bark yet haha Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I think they are fantastic looking modern plants! Im not sure whether to keep the rocks there either. Any suggestions as to next steps in general would be much appreciated! Cheers! Re: Cordylines and Yuccas - do you have any!? Please post pi 2Mar 15, 2010 7:34 pm I like the garden just how you have it; I don’t think it needs anything else. Very nice! I've done the same on either side of the front door, you cant see them from the road just yet as they are still quite young - but i'm happy to wait! Please post pi 4Mar 15, 2010 7:49 pm It looks great; just get more mulch to add to the tops. Nice house! I wouldn't mind a bit of shade over the outdoor setting Re: Cordylines and Yuccas - do you have any!? Please post pi 9Mar 15, 2010 8:05 pm Think I’ll be giving the Yuccus a miss after that big one in the pic! Please post pi 10Mar 15, 2010 8:12 pm LOL - Fu Manchu I've read your other posts aswell i'll try to prune them in the next 30 - 50 years to stop that from happening haha, wish me luck please! I will hopefully be keeping them quite tame, my plan is to keep them around 1.5 - 2 metres. Once they get too big - my plan is to cut the head off at a 1.5 metre height and replant out the front, and use the bases out the back for more yuccas! Thanks also Fu Manchu for the advice in the other threads about the leaves sagging - it had me worried, hopefully they sort themselves out when they grow! Cheers! Re: Cordylines and Yuccas - do you have any!? Please post pi 12Mar 15, 2010 8:24 pm The heights you can control but it is the base of them that will be the hard part. Re: Cordylines and Yuccas - do you have any!? Please post pi 13Mar 15, 2010 8:26 pm hi mate, out of curiousity - how long do you think it will take them to grow to 1 - 1.5 metres, in part sun? i've heard its around a year? is that true? you seem to know alot about yuccas! cheers! Re: Cordylines and Yuccas - do you have any!? Please post pi 14Mar 15, 2010 9:10 pm It will be longer than that. Re: Cordylines and Yuccas - do you have any!? Please post pi 15Mar 15, 2010 9:11 pm Oh and you will need a heap more mulch in that area feed the soil That is what feeds the plants I bet that is different to what you have always thought. Re: Cordylines and Yuccas - do you have any!? Please post pi 17Mar 16, 2010 11:51 pm Ahh but feeding the soil is something done by so much more than one thing. Mulch which as it breaks down creates new soils. The microbes that do that increase in population. Molasses is there to feed the microbes and powerfeed does something different again. As the microbes grow in numbers they produce quite naturally the nutrients required by the plant. As the soil gets better it gets some excellent structure to it. This also makes the pH at a naturally balanced level so factors associated with pH are then unimportant. Blood and bone won't go astray. Great start but so much more to go Re: Cordylines and Yuccas - do you have any!? Please post pi 18Mar 17, 2010 7:51 pm Cheers again mate, will give the blood and bone - etc a shot aswell over the weekend! Another random question, with yuccas - do they grow from the top or the bottom? (if that makes sense!? haha) i have heard from some people that the new leaves grow out of the top, and others say that they grow from the stem. I'm talking about leaves on the current stem, not the other 'pups' which may sprout up later! Also - i have noticed on some of them that the stem turns brown near the base, this seems normal as i've also seen it on others, and makes me think that maybe the new leaves sprout from the top!?????
