They know that there are empty houses full of things worth stealing and few, if any, witnesses. When we moved to our first home we were one of the first in our subdivision. I was a bit naiive (sp?) then and didn't realise that the guy driving down our street with a bath in his ute, or the one with a trailer full of gravel, was actually knocking this stuff off from building sites further down the street. I probably waved to them as they passed me working in the front garden. Just being neighbourly. Since we've been here I've seen a few suspicious bods driving round in the dark where they clearly don't belong. If I can, I get a rego number and report it to the police. If we all do nothing, these people keep profiting and we keep footing the bill by way of increased building costs and insurance premiums. Smurph, I hope you have some neighbours move in soon. Do you have security sensor lighting? If not, I'd be putting some in, pronto. Re: Being one of the first few in a new estate... 8Mar 08, 2010 6:33 pm Sounds like fun. Sleep over at your place? BYO ? Our house thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=18335 Re: Being one of the first few in a new estate... 9Mar 08, 2010 6:50 pm Smurph.... there is not many of us living up the top of our estate even now but when we moved in i think we were the 5th people in the whole estate. Both the display homes got broken into us across the road a few weeks ago and the police came and saw us and said anything suspicious at all just call them! As others have said at the end of the day it put the prices up of building/insurance etc... It must be scary though. We heard our dog barking alot and it wasn't his normal bark so knew something was up, DP went out but couldn't see anything as they were around the front of the display homes.... Hope it all settles down around your place... 2nd build here we come in Whittlesea! https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=92617 1st Build - Henley - Cooper in Doreen! I'd hear windows break at 3am and that type of thing. It's quite amazing how much of it stopped when I started leaving some lights on around the house at night - I guess it was a big statement that HEY!!! SOMEONE LIVES HERE!!! and I might be awake and watching. The biggest problem I had after that was the truckies that would pull into this big, empty estate to park somewhere quiet for a while and sleep - always between midnight and 6am. Being a single 25 year old gal living there on my own, you can only imagine how freaky it was knowing that there was pretty much not a damned thing in the world that I could do should one of them decide to come 'visiting'!! Thankfully, it never happened! being a truckie i can tell you not to worry too much, theyre only looking for a quiet spot to get the head down for a few hours lol, why do people think truckies are big bad evil people? Re: Being one of the first few in a new estate... 11Mar 08, 2010 7:27 pm Beattun, not sure about your fellow work-colleagues but maybe people base this on 'appearance'. I've never seen a truckie who resembled the wimpy-looking class nerd from when I went to school Re: Being one of the first few in a new estate... 12Mar 08, 2010 8:00 pm gypsy77 Beattun, not sure about your fellow work-colleagues but maybe people base this on 'appearance'. I've never seen a truckie who resembled the wimpy-looking class nerd from when I went to school ah but isnt it the quiet ones that always end up being the serial killers? or so hollywood says anyway Re: Being one of the first few in a new estate... 13Mar 08, 2010 8:13 pm and might i add its quite hard for us to find good spots to park up for the night, the majority of us do the right thing and try and make as little noise as possible when parking near residential areas but you will find some that dont care Re: Being one of the first few in a new estate... 14Mar 08, 2010 8:20 pm beattun ah but isnt it the quiet ones that always end up being the serial killers? or so hollywood says anyway Hollywood also tells us that the good guy always wins and everything works out in the end. I believe every bit of it. Stefan Building the M3tr!con Liberty 42 at Stonecutters Ridge. The New Build Blog - "Life, In Progress."
