Browse Forums Building A New House Re: building our DREAM!! 2Mar 06, 2010 5:01 pm Firstly, GRATS!! You must be thrilled =) what a gorgeous design!! I love the large walk-in pantry and linen. You can never have too much storage! I wish you guys all the best with your beautiful home, and I hope the build is full of excitement and good times, and otherwise rather uneventful =) Looking forward to seeing all your selections and progress as your new home just "happens" before your eyes! How exciting =)))) Re: building our DREAM!! 3Mar 07, 2010 9:28 am So whilst the heavens havent opened up with a downpour as yet, I thought i would upload pics of our colours. Both liam and I love the look of the brown and cream colours, we have looked through many and have fell in love, however as we are trying to minimise the upgrades we thought brown, dark chocolate wood grain look would be spoilt with a laminate benchtops, so we have changed our mind to a black, white and stone feature (hoping this stays in budget). This is the house facade we have chosen for our Columbia, by Dennis Family Homes. As part of our estate's design guidelines within our stage, the house must have render or contrast brick. Driving through our estate neally every second house has render, therefore we like the thought of contrast brick. At the moment we are thinking the pillars on the porch will be contrast brick in Duchess, however personally (bf just nods) I would like to have more contrast brick to break up the brown, unsure as to where though!! Idea's, suggestions are welcome if not ENCOURAGED!! Laney Our Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=30685 Re: building our DREAM!! 4Mar 07, 2010 11:21 am Over the last 3 weeks we have been to Malaysia and Bali, loved our holiday!!! Before our trip away we put our $1000 deposit with Dennis Family on our house the Columbia, we wanted to lock our prices in ASAP!! As first home buyers we receive the First Home Buyers Grant which is fantastic!! First we thought we will just have standard then of course our fantastic sales rep, who did not pressure us at all told us about the extra package, includes; dishwasher, washing line, letterbox, front landscape, downlights, carpets and tiles included, i think that was it, can't remember, so much information!!! As it stands at the moment the door to kitchen from garage is included, tiles throughout kitchen meals, entry hall and family room, carpet in remainding besides wet areas!! Great Deal as far as we are concerned!! So our dilemma at the moment is, overhead cupboards in the kitchen, I really want them, bf not fussed thinks this can be done later down the track, however I'm thinking why not just do it now? Unsure of cost?? Also as we have just done our layout for our entertaining area we are completely stumped if we should upgrade the meals window to a sliding door.. this is our plan for our backyard. Having bought a huge block we wanted to make a big outdoor entertaining living area. Idea for outdoors: The flooring we are hoping to do will be timber decking depending on cost, as we are wanting to have tiles inside white gloss, we wanted colour outdoors to reflect colour throughout the house!! The pink against the edge, will be timber wall to add as privacy and a backdrop for our tv, timber wall opposite spa for privacy with towel racks and some footy posters no doubt, bf is richmond mad!! Also another timber wall to hide off our bins etc. Our Main Brick: Boral Brown Terrain Contrast brick: Beaumonde: Tanami: Sienna: Duchess: Cannot find any pics!! Boral Roof Tiles, Macquarie Range: Gunmetal: Our Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=30685 Re: building our DREAM!! 5Mar 07, 2010 12:00 pm Here are our colour choices so far, as we feel the house is open but not a huge house we are wanting to keep the colours neutral so I can decorate with different colours, our cupboards and benchtops are decided aslong as DFH allow us to use the samples we chose lol!! Cupboards in both bathroom and kitchen will be wilsonart Madagascar with wilsonar designer white benchtops in high gloss. Madagascar: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So now is the confusing part, I personally love the look of white tiles, however we don't want to overkill the white, I was thinking white wall tiles with a stone feature tile running horizontal through, however i also wanted white floor tiles, now im confused as to what would look good and easy to look after!! Thinking possibly a silver grey wall tile as kitchen splashback, I am wanting high gloss designer white overhead cupboards. wall tiles: Obelis Grey Gloss 300x600 Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Linea Grey Gloss Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Feature Tile So i think under the rangehood i just want to do two vertical strips of feature tiles on each end of the rangehood. I'm also thinking maybe something with a bit of colour to inject some life in the dark madagascar and white benchtops.. what do you think any suggestions?? Also for the bathrooms i was thinking of doing the same cupboards and benchtops as kitchen but maybe with a white wall tile, feature stone tile running horizontally and then maybe a high gloss silver/grey floor tile or perhaps a dark floor tile. SO VERY CONFUSED!! PLEASE ASSIST!!! Laney. Our Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=30685 Re: building our DREAM!! 6Mar 07, 2010 3:37 pm Hi Laney, Looking good. When do you start to build? Colours are so hard to pick as there are so many to choose from. Just have a base colour range eg:browns, beiges, greys, whites, creams etc and just tone everthing in and you then shouldn't go too far wrong. Your colours are much what we are going with. Madagascar and gloss/lustre white in kitchen. White caeser stone on island and black on back bench. Glass splashback but colour not finalised yet. We are going to have wooden floor though. We have wood currently and we really prefer it. We have recently paid our initial deposit with DFH. We are going to build the Charlton 291. We don't get land title till April at present so wont be building for at least 3+ months. We have most of our colours picked out but haven't put them up yet as I can still change my mind on some and give my DH more grief. He thinks it should be all settled by now but until we do our colour selection all is up for change. If anything changes it wont be much. This will be our 4th house we have built. Gluttons for punishment. This was to be our downsize house but only going down about 3sqm. Granny flat or retirement home next. LOL A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. Very cute!! Our land wont be ready until May, so Dennis have confirmed if Settlement takes place in May then we will begin build Late June, early July, and house will be finished by December!! So very excited. Unfortunately my bf is away for a couple of months so we have to choose our colours before he heads off for work!! Men, Liam doesn't say much he first liked the brown and cream and now the dark colour he likes, i think he is sick of me showing so many pics of different colours!! He would quite happily be outside kicking the footy or watching sport on tv then have any involvement in the choice of colours. Isn't it funny, i don't know if this is the same for everyone, but how much research as a woman we do in regards to everything such as colours, layouts, storage space etc. and all the men want to know is when build starts and then there out there to check on everything from the frame to the state of the slab!! I suppose there is a little bit of tradesmen in every man!! Im about to jump on the DFH website and have a look at your house. Is this the first time you have built with DFH?? Have you always built in the same area?? I wish we could afford to do the wooden floor, Liam's dad is a handyman and has just finished there house in floorboards looks great!! So hopefully one day he can do ours!! Although im already thinking of plans to build another house!! Haha Laney. Anyone know how to do this? Laney Hi Laney, Congrats on the commencement of your building journey I hope that all goes well with your build & that you can enjoy it & are spared from all the ups & downs the majority of us have. It is such an exciting time especially when you see your dream take shape. I agree with your comments about men & having no interest in colours etc just the construction. Dh is exactly the same but that suits me because then I get complete choice of what I like & he is happy to go along with it! We are first time builders as well so it will be fun to share your journey & compare notes. Re: building our DREAM -- Colours please ASSIST!! 12Mar 07, 2010 8:49 pm I like it but I wonder if the laundry and bathroom can be swapped over. i tend to prefer the laundry as close to the rear of the house as possible as it's closer to the clothesline (which apart from just the distance of carrying washing is also a cost factor for pathway to the clothesline. Or even if bedroom 2 can be swapped with the bathroom/laundry/toilet so then there is a separation (for noise) between each of the bedrooms. After sleeping at my parents recently and being able to hear my Uncle snoring in the next room as if he was in the room with us I'm keen on acoustic reduction with bathrooms/laundry's not just gyprock or insulation. Re: building our DREAM -- Colours please ASSIST!! 13Mar 08, 2010 9:18 pm Hi Laney, I think you've chosen your block and your plan really well + put a lot of thought into it. At the time we were (initially) looking at single story houses, this would have been one of my favourites ~ wide enough to carry two rooms at the front as well as the entry and garage. Nice! You would soften the contrast between the white gloss overhead cabinets if you did pick a soft grey. But you would have to be careful that it didn't 'clash' or look like a 'mis-match'. There was a lovely kitchen I saw in the Decorating Lounge that had very simple white tiles as the splashback, with a single horizontal line of feature silver tiles. I love the texture on the Linea Grey Gloss (I had this on our shortlist, but we just aren't "gloss" people! ) ~ this is a beautiful tile. Are you thinking of this for the kitchen? Or the bathroom / ensuite? I would be a bit frightened of an all-white floor, but then, we have kids (so I have good reason to be frightened!! ) Looking forward to watching your build! ~ cheers, J _______________________________________________________________ We're a knockdown | rebuild ~ Melb SE burbs Building modified version of the Fairhaven Glenaire Homeone thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=28429 _______________________________________________________________ Re: building our DREAM -- Colours please ASSIST!! 14Mar 09, 2010 10:12 am Hi Laney Love the colours you have picked! We are building with Dennis in Botanic Ridge and we are waiting for our colour selection appointment to happen. So far so good with Dennis. Look forward to keeping up with your build! Re: building our DREAM -- Colours please ASSIST!! 15Mar 09, 2010 11:50 am Hi there! So many decisions I know. It's tough, and it is very hard to visualize the end result - especially for un-creative people like me I came across this thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=29127 and I think they are using similar kitchen cupboards to what you have chosen. Have a look, maybe it will help? Good luck, you are definitely on the right track! Dh is exactly the same but that suits me because then I get complete choice of what I like & he is happy to go along with it! I resemble this remark! lol. Seriously though, my fiance and I are picking our colours on Thursday and its been doing my head in for the last couple of weeks trying to work out what to go with, and I am a guy! Unless Im the exception to the rule? lol Re: building our DREAM -- Colours please ASSIST!! 17Mar 09, 2010 6:36 pm Thanks to all who have responded, I would do the quotes to answer questions however not quite sure how to do it, and whilst I type, bf is busy watching his dexter dvd and telling me the story line (hope he realises I dislike this show ASAP as he still has another 3 seasons to watch!! AHHHH!!). Fernyhouse, that is a great idea, however trying to restrict from too many changes, keep to the basics, so we can add our own touch to it, and we have big plans for our background!! Can't wait for the backyard!!! Vanilla Tree, thanks for your input, greatly appreciated!! To be honest, we actually went into beaumont tiles and we were very overwhelmed with all the colours, so we decided to get examples of what we like, however the tiles, well lets just say to many shapes, sizes, colours, textures, so I had a look on the internet and thats were I found these colours, at the moment the only colour we have sent in stone (if available to us) is the Madagascar, we both love it, a colour we finally agreed on!! As i'm wanting the overhead cupboards in high gloss white, I was leaning towards doing a greyish wall tile with no feature, at the moment we are both not very keen on the feature tile, somehow I think my choice of feature tile will date quickly so perhaps we might give this a miss. However now perhaps, if we did a white wall tile and a stone feature tile, we might do the flooring a dark grey perhaps? we both do love the high gloss so hopefully we find something. Also with the bathroom I have no idea, we are thinking to keep the same thing throughout the house and then perhaps eventually paint a different colour, really we have no idea, would love a few suggestions!!! Laney. Haha Diesel, you must be the exception, im starting to think my bf is colourblind, at the start he was keen to choose colours, I think all the laughing I have done may have put him off, but i wont admit to it . Good look with your colours, hope you make a thread so i can have a look. Our Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=30685 Re: building our DREAM -- Colours please ASSIST!! 18Mar 09, 2010 6:45 pm Well, I was popping in to say welcome, but you just lost me with that I don't like Dexter remark... Kidding.... Love your floorplan - I would have killed for that walk-in linen cupboard in my first house. I would have killed for any linen cupboard at all, actually. White wall tiles, stone feature and grey floor tiles sounds lovely to me. Don't overthink this stuff - you'll go nuts. Take a bit of time, make up your mind and then stop looking at other people's ideas, or you'll change your mind every five minutes.
