Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Anyone know about carpet??? 3Feb 09, 2010 8:56 pm Kateypink, just what underlay was specified in your contract? And what underlay have they installed? If it comes to having the underlay changed, a good installer should be able to do so without great problems. But it can be fiddly, as carpet joins might have to be cut and redone at doorways. It depends on the floorplan. I'm afraid 'somewoman's suggestion of doubling up underlay is definitely not a good idea. Ash. Re: Anyone know about carpet??? 4Feb 09, 2010 11:04 pm If they have to split the joins demand new carpet, It will never be laid the same a second time. Just think, the carpet has been tensioned and cut into the area perfectly, Now they have to pull it up roll it up change the underlay and "make" the carpet fit exactly as it did before. Good Luck Re: Anyone know about carpet??? 6Feb 09, 2010 11:24 pm royalblue I'm afraid 'somewoman's suggestion of doubling up underlay is definitely not a good idea. Just to satisfy my curious mind, why is this so? Re: Anyone know about carpet??? 7Feb 10, 2010 12:53 am Its NOT according to Australian Standards (2455.1:2007) for starters! For all the reasons that I have harped on about for ages, Vunda! Too thick and too spongey! Carpet will be like a trampoline, placing all sorts of stresses on edges and seams. Its likely it would come off the smoothedge before long and generally be a mess. Ash. Re: Anyone know about carpet??? 9Feb 17, 2010 5:25 pm Ash is right. Double the underlay is a DISASTER waiting to happen. Backing will go fast (it stretches down as you SINK into it, but doesn't stretch back - it's not a trampoline) and you will be buying new carpet sooner rather than later. A good thing for the industry though, if you are feeling generous Should just be a couple of doorway joins. I would suggest with a good layer, it wouldn't be a drama. Go DENSE with your underlay - thicker is not better - denser is better.
