Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 19, 2010 10:10 pm hi everyone, we are in the middle of designing our home and plan on going for polished concrete in the living areas. we have a north facing living area and we plan on using the thermal mass in winter to keep us warm and cool in summer. we want to go with the full option - grinding with a hardener, then polishing. not just a grind and seal. my first question... if we do this do we still need to apply some sort of sealer to protect against stains etc? and my second... how prone is this type of floor to damage - through normal wear and tear, scratches, staining etc? thanks in advance... If is always advisable to install an impregnator at the end of a polished concrete project. Whist polished concrete done in a method as such as Hiperfloor will provide extremely stain resistant floors, an impregnator will guarantee it. An impregnator only needs to be applied once, and is not a topical product. If applied correctly it should last around 20 years in a domestic situation. Quote: how prone is this type of floor to damage - through normal wear and tear, scratches, staining etc? We have done accelerated wear testing on our floors through the CSIRO, and they were amazed at the results. The process we provide turns concrete into a highly abrasive resistant floor, it is very very very difficult to scratch (dragging a chair will not damage the floor), it is highly resistant to staining from fats and oils, but like all things, it can still be effected by acids. I hope this helps.
