Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Jan 03, 2010 2:47 pm Hi everyone (in particular anyone with carpet cleaning knowledge!) We moved into our new house a month ago. New Year's Eve my parents were babysitting the kids.... nail polish is now on the carpet!!!!!! And quite a bit too! I haven't touched it but then I thought I'd visit in here to get some advice! So carpet is a light brown/beige colour, probably an acrylic sort of thing (wasn't the bottom of the range, but definately not an expensive carpet). Nail polish is dark pink, as I said, I haven't attempted removal, thought I'd wait and ring carpet place on Monday. I'm hoping I haven't left my run too late? Surely there is a way to remove it? Pleeeeease help me...... Thanks Re: How can I Remove Nail Polish on My New Carpet? 2Jan 03, 2010 4:55 pm I really don't know. I was going to suggest wait until you speak to the carpet people tomorrow before trying to attempt different remedies. I'm not sure whether nail polish removal is different for the various carpet blends etc. We are getting a wool carpet and the site for care and maintenance of nail polish is 'clear nail polish remover without lanolin'. I have also read though elsewhere that nail polish remover can also dis-colour carpet so who really knows? Do you by any chance have a spare piece of carpet/sample piece? You could test it on that? Re: How can I Remove Nail Polish on My New Carpet? 3Jan 03, 2010 6:34 pm As dollar said, nail polish remover will probably remove the nail polish, but it may ruin the carpet. If feeling adventurous, use some nail polish remover on an area that doesn't matter (or off cut if you have it). BTW, when I say nail polish remover, don't but the small bottle that costs a fortune. Go to your hardware store and buy acetone. You get a large bottle for a lot less cost. And it certainly wont have lanolin in it. Yes Acetone is the appropriate chemical approach, BUT........ You can good results with care and patience, OR WRECK THE CARPET. NOT because of the acetone necessarily, but by incorrect application and technique. So begin by working on one or two small spots only. Acetone won't damage most components opf the carpet (the yarns) but if you wet out the carpet with acetone, you risk dissolving the latex glue that hold the backings together. So don't apply the acetone directly to the carpet. Also, acetone will s-l-o-w-l-y dissolve the nail polish, so it needs contact time. You will need a clean white cotton towel or nappy, a bottle of acetone from Bunnings or the supermarket. Also some NITRILE (solvent resistant) gloves. CAUTION: Avoid breathing fumes. Have good ventilation, like a fan behind you directing fumes toward a door or window. Ideally use a proper solvent respirator. Fold the nappy into a pad of a few layers. Apply a little acetone to the pad, apply it to the nail polish, and keep it in contact for a few minutes. Then check for colour transfer into the nappy. Proceed carefully. NO RUBBING OR SCRUBBING. Not too much pressure, and not too much acetone. Keep refolding and using clean sections of the nappy. Continue until it is removed. If its taking a while or fumes are getting to you, take a break and get some fresh air. If it takes a while to start dissolving, you can use little bits of cotton wool soaked in acetone. Place this over each spot to just cover the nail polish. Leave this for 10 minutes or so to soften the nail polish, and then absorb it up with the nappy. The important thing is NOT to overwet and allow the nail polish to spread, but keep absorbing it up as it dissolves. Call if you have a prob. Ash. Re: How can I Remove Nail Polish on My New Carpet? 5Jan 04, 2010 8:54 pm Thanks Ash I knew you'd come through with the goods. I'll have to wait until I get to PErth to pick up some acetone and see how we go. Then if all else fails I can get it patched apparently! Re: How can I Remove Nail Polish on My New Carpet? 8Jan 06, 2010 2:18 am Acetone should be available from a local supermaket, hardware or general store. If not, use nail polish remover. Another thought... can you post a pic of the carpet where the nail polish is? I might have a simpler remedy for you, but would need to see what the situation is.
