Browse Forums Lighting + Lighting Design 1 Dec 20, 2009 10:31 pm We are days away from moving in and although Christmas by candle light sounds nice, i'm no romantic. I've got the first 10 of 36 odd 20 watt CFL's (the rest are on back order for delivery tomorrow) but am starting to rethink the living / dining / kitchen area. Please give me your opinions on the 2 layouts shown below. The hole saw is on the drill ready to bore the holes tomorrow. Halogen is very bad for shadows so maybe in the ensuite is a bad idea especially with shelves etc. Everywhere else id go cfl thats how im doing my house cfl everywhere except above kitchen bench. Re: Urgent help on CFL downlight layout 3Dec 22, 2009 2:11 pm Thanks Dylan, I am really after information in regards to recommended spacing / distance between CFL down lights. There is no info anywhere that i can find. I have been told by one girl in a lighting shop that i can space the 20W (larger style cfl downlights) at similar centres to standard 50w halogens (1m from walls and 2 metres between lights) but i dont want to base my whole layout on one persons opinion. Most shops have told me i need to speak to my electrician but my electrician (one of my sparkys from work) has had little experience with CFL downlights as we are mainly commercial. Please, someone must have a few of the larger style CFL downlights that they can comment on, i just need to know is 2m too far apart, or is 2m is too close. something anything Re: Urgent help on CFL downlight layout 4Dec 22, 2009 5:56 pm With 20w CFL, They could be spaced the same as 50W halogen. Any less (say 11w) and id have some more lights. When they state there equivelent wattage in cfl to an incandescent, my opinion is they are very generous. Re: Urgent help on CFL downlight layout 5Dec 22, 2009 8:55 pm Yes, for 20W CFL, go for 1 m from walls and then every 2 m (just like 50W halogens). Do have any details for the particular lights? I installed the cfl down lights down the hall way and in the ensuite and master bedroom yesterday and 2 in the kitchen. I was happy with the light they put out and based on that opted for the 1st layout. The one with less lights. I installed the rest of them today and love them, cant believe people are still bagging fluoro down lights. I really like the colour of the warm whites and the even spread of fluoro's is far nicer than the direct light of halogens. I'm lit now! Re: Urgent help on CFL downlight layout 9Dec 27, 2009 8:38 pm wake_me, Good to hear you like your lights. You mentioned that they are 120 Jupiter. do you have any more details. I'd like to take a look at them online.
