Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering Re: Professional carpet cleaning - sutherland area NSW? 5Dec 18, 2009 9:25 pm Funfun Hi Ash Thankssss. Tell me would they come out to do a small hall (4*1) and a staircase? Yes of course! However, its prudent to make the most of their visit. If you have some other carpeted rooms or areas, it makes sense for them to do it all together. Minimum charges will apply, and it may not cost much more to do a bit extra at the same time. I certainly recommend they clean any areas that you have done with the hire machine, as DIY jobs are notorious for leaving sticky residues that cause rapid resoiling. But good luck getting a good tech in so close to xmas! Ash. Re: Professional carpet cleaning - sutherland area NSW? 6Dec 23, 2009 1:53 pm Hi Ash, thanks for the tips. I'll leave it until next year Other quick question. If they do come will they move the furniture should we do this? I'm guessing it will probably depend from one business to another. Re: Professional carpet cleaning - sutherland area NSW? 7Dec 23, 2009 9:58 pm I can't speak for other businesses. But as I see it, if I am a professional carpet cleaning technician there to clean your carpets, you are paying me for my TIME. The ultimate price I charge comes down to what time is taken, and a few other factors. So if rooms are empty, it allows me to concentrate on the job without distractons and wasted time. But its not reasonable to expect people to move heavy stuff out of their place for my sake. I ask my customers to have the floor reasonably uncluttered as best they can. Tie back curtains, lift cords and bedclothes etc, so the floor is fairly clear. Larger things like sidebaords, lounges etc can be left, and I will move them back and forth as required. I am quite accustomed to moving furniture around and/or cleaning up to stuff as need be. If you want done beneath beds, make sure you've cleared your stuff from under the beds. I DO find some interesting things at times! Generally speaking, you will have a better experience if you are cooperative and helpful, and make the job easier for the techs. Also, be sensible and think about OH&S considerations. Hoses and slippery floors are a hazard, so it pays to allow the techs to do their job without the headaches of people who don't take proper care! Ash. But as I see it, if I am a professional carpet cleaning technician there to clean your carpets, you are paying me for my TIME. I wish all professionals (and tradies) would take that attitude, Ash. I never ceased to be amazed at how people want to dive into a job like a bull at a gate without discussing the details first. Sometimes, they are happy to chat about the weather or similar or something like "nice spot you have here" but not about the job they've come to do. I consider the money I pay for the time taken to understand the problem/scope of work, to explain how the job will be tackled, to discuss options and to confirm that expectations are realistic is well-spent. Often there is an unhealthy focus on the cost and it can be quite difficult to convey that the cost is secondary to the real priority, which is to get the best job done that is reasonably possible. On the rare occasion that I've had to express concern about shortcut's taken, the response is usually "If I did it that way it would've cost $xxx. When I reply "and I would've been happy to pay $xxx", we both end up feeling dissatisfied and frustrated. Also, we spend a lot of time and effort to prepare the site for any work to the maximum extent that we can. Similarly, at the end of the job, if the "clean-up" seems to be a chore, we tend to say "Don't worry about that - we'll do it" A lot of the time, this is a courtesy thing. If you haven't tried to make things as easy as possible for the person you're employing it seems rude. Other times it's because you know you're going to have to do it again anyway. Being oldies and reasonably comfortable financially, I guess the response we'd rather would be along the lines of "Well, it's easier for me than you and, if you don't mind paying for my time, I'm more than happy to do it". I guess it's all in the communication and we should probably be clearer about our preferences. But part of it is conditioned by the obvious time pressures that seem to apply to most contractors these days. Everything seems to be done in a bit of a rush and you end up feeling grateful the person has even showed up in the first place. No wonder there is a strong trend to DIY. Anyway, enough rambling. I'm sure I echo the thoughts of a lot of forum members in saying we only wish you were in business in our state. Thanks also for going out of your way to point me in the direction of local carpet care experts who might have a similar approach to you.
