It was a strenuous job, but we are really happy about it. Thanks to our supervisor for letting us do it. We used Stanley utility knife for cutting and it was bit difficult to do, but finally we made it. When we went in the morning they all stayed put. Thanks a lot to Homeone members. Good Luck!! Re: Insulation 7Dec 05, 2009 7:59 pm Hi mate, did you do all the external walls? How much did the insulation cost? Re: Insulation 8Dec 05, 2009 11:39 pm Nan75 Hi there, We're in the process of building with PD and they provide R2.5 insulation to ceiling and sisalation to walls. We didn't upgrade it during contracts so they are not willing to do it as a PCV as we are already in the framing stage, but I've been advised to increase this. How do we increase our R rating now as we are in the framing process? What is the best way? What's a good rating to increase to? And how do I do it? Would it be best to go through the builders suppliers and get them to do it during construction, or do it ourselves? If we have to do it ourselves, Where can we buy them and how to install them and what are the good ones in the market? Thanks in advance!! I don't know who told your R2.5 isn't good enough, I'll bet you won't be able to tell the difference even if you did have R3.5. But there are so many other factors that matter just as much if not more. The colour and type of roof. Do you have sarking? I'd get sarking before worrying higher R values. Sarking is that shinny stuff that not only provides some insulation, it stops leaks, many new houses leak. Do you have "whirly birds", we don't but I'm starting to get keen on them again, I went into the roof cavity the other day, ouch, mucho hot up there. We have slate grey terra cotta tiles and R3 insulation or was it 3.5 insulation but without whirly birds its cooking up there, all the heat gets trapped with no place to go. We also have solid sandstock bricks and insulation in the walls and mid-floor BUT after all that, we still need a post build air-con so as I say there are many factors and plenty of other ways to spend your money Re: Insulation 9Dec 08, 2009 10:44 pm A.Ryder Do you have "whirly birds", we don't but I'm starting to get keen on them again, I went into the roof cavity the other day, ouch, mucho hot up there. Removing the hot air from your roof cavity doesn't actually alter ceiling temperature. See Common myths Re: Insulation 10Jan 13, 2010 9:25 am I just did a post on this kind of topic, We took possession of the house 24th of December and we have had a few problems over the christmas period but the one that bugs us the most is that the upstairs of our two storey house gets quite hot inside. The house is in Sydney. We have a low pitched roof, 20 degrees, roof tiles are concrete dark gray, good quality sarking throughout and R3 Batts in the ceiling. So what did we do wrong? I expected that it would be a lot cooler inside, in fact as you go down the stairs to the ground floor it is like walking into a fridge it is that noticeable. dymonite69, you are saying that roof ventilators don't help? What do others think is a better way to fix this fro me? Dan Re: Insulation 11Jan 13, 2010 10:51 am Thanks to danc12 for sharing this! Definitely something to think about, as we're also having sarking and R3 batts, with a 25 degree roof pitch. Hmmmm, maybe to ask my SS what joles suggested (upgrade to R4 for cash, sell R3 on ebay)!!??!! My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Insulation 12Jan 13, 2010 11:06 am I am having the same concerns, we are building a 2 storey (in QLD) that will have wall sisalation to the upper and lower floors, R2.5 batts to the roof space (includes garage and alfresco) and R1.5 to the upper storey external walls. We will have 2 whirly birds as well. I have been wondering if we should be upgrading this, does anyone have any advice??? We are hopefully going to have a site start soon so all changes would be dependent on our SS. thanks Re: Insulation 13Jan 13, 2010 11:06 am I am having the same concerns, we are building a 2 storey (in QLD) that will have wall sisalation to the upper and lower floors, R2.5 batts to the roof space (includes garage and alfresco) and R1.5 to the upper storey external walls. Breather wall wrap for the walls Bradford R1.5 glasswool batts in the walls Bradford R3.5 batts in roof Anticon Roof blanket under the colorbond (on advice from the roofer, most houses just have sisalation but Anticon or rook blanket has the foil on one side and insulation on the other. I have been in the roof while doing the ducting and I can tell you it takes up a good chunk of the heat. The theroy is the roof blanket under the tin takes a chunk out of the heat and then it hits the ceiling insulation. So basically our house has two layers of insulation being the wall wrap then wall insulation and anticon then ceiling insulation. The wall insulation cost us $500.00 The roof blanket was about 1000 The wall breather wrap was about 450 Ceiling batts about 1000 I think it is a very important part of the overall house in the long run and for the sake of a few thousand dollars get the most you can! We got all our insulation from Bowens. Hey guys building a new place through a volume builder and just wondering if i should complain to the site supervisor as we just had plasterboard installed. Looks like… 0 11441 1000000% definitely add insulation. I have in my home and it makes a big difference minimising sound transfer. Insulation is pretty cheap and definitely worth it 2 6391 |
